Excellent article by Maher. Maybe some of you knee jerks will read this if a small part is snipped out.

Here's why the economy turned: The dot-com bubble burst. (Obviously on the orders of Gray Davis.) The airline industry collapsed. (Just as Gray Davis planned.) We fought two wars. (Playing right into Gray Davis' hands.) And Dick Cheney's friends at Enron "gamed" the energy market and ripped off the state for billions.

So you can see the problem: Gray Davis.

In the public sector, every government agency is facing big job cuts because of the budget mess. Meanwhile, in the private sector, jobs are being lost left and right. And there is nothing strange with that, because given a choise, why would any sane company want to open a business in a state with such a punishing environment for private workers? Where would any corporate CEO look first when seeking to close plants due to high costs?

You have a point here. However Gray Davis didn't start nor is he responsible for the huge increase in workmans compensation costs in this State. Our litigious society did that.

You have to create the wealth first before you bicker about sharing it. The Democrats frequently forget this inconvenient little detail.

The Democrats control 60% of the California Assembly and 60% of the Senate. They also hold all eight state elected offices. They've dominated the legislature forever, and have held the Governer's mansion for 5 years. In that time they have so botched the economy that sales tax revenue in San Francisco has fallen 50% in two years.

The economy wasn't botched by the Democrats, it was botched by war, and energy costs, and the dot com collapse and a poor stock performance.

Quote
I'll repeat. California has the highest level of sales tax, the highest minimum wage, the most restrictive overtime rules, the highest electric rates, the largest budget deficit, the worst bond rating, and the highest worker's compensation premiums in the US. At some companies, worker's comp exceeds payroll as an expense. Talk about encouraging layoffs and discouraging employment.

If you're a business owner, what part of this is good news? How would this encourage you to expand your business? And without business expansion, how are tax revenues generated? How is unemployment brought down?

(California is a bit like Sweden in the way they are committing economical suicide) [/B]

Sales taxes  - California at 7.90% ranks 6th behind

1. Tennessee 9.35%
2. Louisiana 8.45%
3. Washington 8.30%
4. New York 7.95%
5. Oklahoma 7.95%

Minimum wage we've already covered.
Overtime rules are the same as a huge mafority of the States. Overtime for work over 8 hours in a day or over 40 hours in a week. We can also work 4 x 10hour schedules if necessary without paying OT.

The highest electric rates in the country are in NYC.

Please try to stick to the facts next time.

LOL. You are saying the California economy is in the tank because of 911? Why does California have a deficit more than all other states combined?

And if you are going to say California's ecomony woes are due to 911, then I can expect you to believe that this is the case for the natianal economy under Bush.

Hey, cool! When I was getting ready to retire from the Air Force, I interviewed with a company with offices in CA.  The interviewer asked me if I'd consider a position in Torrance, CA.  With a straight face I said, "Sure, but I doubt you can afford it."

because our idiotic Dems sold power to Kalifornia

you legislator tells your utilitys who to sell power to and for what price?

much of my work is in the power industry.  most states have regulated utilitys (all that I can think of except california where I believe they are actually state owned, but I rarely work down there so while I know their system is different I have no real interest in finding out exactly how it is different).

but in most states the gov't sets the % of profit they can charge on power sold in their state.  they all sell power across state lines.  when your utility is selling power across state lines you can charge whatever the market will bear, then the buying utility will charge that plus the allowed profit % to their customers.  gov't regulates the allowable profit % to power sold in the utilities home area, it does not aprove individual sales or prices.

so the 'evil Dems' didn't sell your power off and screw you. if anything the power sold to cali from washington at the prices fabricated by Chaney and co. just makes more profit for the utilities in your area, making it harder to justify increasing your rates.

now be nice and tell california thank you.

Partially.

Are you saying that 9-11 had NO effect on the economy?

Most economic changes are outside the control of the executive, and yes that goes for Clinton and Reagan too.

California caps the ammount that power companies can charge customers regardless of the cost they paiy to purchase the power, not a percentage of the cost, from my understanding.

So when Davis agreed to purchase power at premium rates, he screwed the California power companies. They were forced to sell power below the cost they paid for it.

That was Steve Peace's great contribution to this state.  What didn't come out until after the arse pushed this through the state legislature that his biggest campaign contributors were the energy corporations.  Of course Davis rewards his lap dog with a plum government post which inturn Steve Peace then puts his wife on some committee that only meets 3 times a year and is payed over $150,000 a year just to meet 3 times a year over tea and crumpets.  And the Democrats say only the Republicans are capable of screwing up a wet dream.

California's economic woes started way before the war started and before Bush was elected.  The budget shortfall is all Grey Davis though, noone other than him is responsible for that.  And not to mention the money that was wasted over the Oracle debacle.  How much $$$$ did California piss in the wind over that one?  Again that was another Grey Davis contribution.
