kidney stones
« on: July 31, 2003, 02:27:46 PM »
had my first one this morning - woke me up about 5am

got to enjoy it until about 8:30 - when it finally passed

if one female nurse said "now you know what we go through to have a baby"  - ten said it.
everytime I turned around, one was telling me that crap.

the good news is they said if you have one, more than likely you'll have more -- can't wait.

Thanks to military spending on research and development, it is now an outpatient procedure.

Just be glad it only hit you for a few hours then passed.  I had one that took 48 hours to make its way to freedom.  Damn narcotics did NOTHING to help that pain.

The procedure used to break up stones was first developed by the military. It once required surgery and an overnight stay.

Did the military develop this procedure as a result of developing some unrelated technology, or were they purposely trying?  What is the procedure?

The name of the procedure I got a few years ago was 'lithotripsy' if memory serves.  I got a spinal, then I was submerged in a stainless steel hot tub, and then shocked the stone to grains with focused sound waves.  Probably some sort of sonar offshoot.

Peed in a strainer for a few days to weigh the debris, no overnite in the hospital, but I stayed in the hotel across from the hospital so I could go in to get checked the next morning.

Dunno, saw it on discovery, they didn't get into specifics. I can only guess it might be used as a weapon to extract someone out of a bunker. If they can aim it on a stone, a shot to someone's brain in that bunker might persuade them to come out. Or just kill them. They didn't say what the military used it for though, I can just guess.

They inject a drug into your spine and all goes numb from there down.

I guess Kidney stone are Renal Calculi ?

If so the Nurse lied :)  according to my wife it easier to give birth (2 time in her case) than supporting a "kidnay stone"
