Yup, first time ever.

Got fired for not signing a reprimand paper for missing a day of work to attend a funeral.

My girlfriend's grandma died and my girlfriend asked me to go with her to the service. I know wasnt entitled to 3 days bereavement leave as we are not common law, so I told the manager where i work 3 days before the funeral if I could have the day off. He said dumb stuff like "why don't you just tell her you have to work, etc etc."

He told me to find a replacement for my shift (in my opinion not my job under the circumstances) and I found one the night before my shift. He didnt show because his dentist appointment took longer than excpected. He didnt not show on purpose, he just couldnt make it.

So I'm left holding the bag and get "written-up" for ditching on my shift. Of course, under the circumstances, this is a huge insult to me and my girlfriend's family. I make this point known, and the manager says "oh please, just how religious are you???"

So where i sit now, im pissed for not being allowed time off for attending a relgious ceremony and for being questioned about my religious status at work. Im also pissed at the whole deal of the management at work not giving two chits about attending a funeral where I was mentioned as per the deceased' wish as a grandchild.

Basically just venting here, but any advise legal or otherwise would be appreciated.

Document everything and get the advice of an attorney.

If they really mentioned religion during your termination you are golden.

No common law marriages = not married. Not married = not family. Not family = not covered by law. Not covered by law = employer's discretion.

Look on the bright side; if he wasn't going to let you go to a funeral, imagine what he would've done about your going to your future children's activities (like school plays and graduations). Getting out might have been for the better in the long run.

Worked at a quick lube fd ski, not a good job anyway, but it is the whole priniciple of the thing.

And yes MT, that is verbatim. After the manager said that i told him he couldnt legally ask me that question. He then said "i knew you were going to pull this legal stuff"

Damn straight I am.

I'm wondering if signing the reprimand might have been the way to go ... sometimes, signing a written reprimand is not an admission of guilt, but only a form of acknowledgment that you have recieved it.... sorry this doesn't help you now...

Gunthr the reprimand stands whether i sign it or not. It is kept on file and refusing to sign the reprimand is an acknowledgement that it is factual as stated.

The reprimand states (so i was told, i would not dignify it by reading or touching it) that i missed worked. That much is true. However the reason for missing work negates any job action. You just can't disallow someone from attending a funeral (read: religious ceremony) I don't need the labour board for this one, i've got my Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

And thanks Sirloin, never thought of it that way.

Sorry to hear that loser. Your boss is obviously a handsomehunk. Since the place is a retail business, I'd contact the local newspaper and see if you can find a journalist interested enough to do a little write-up "Local business fires employee for attending funeral". It's worth a try anyhow, and if you could take away just one of their customers it'd be worth it.

On the job front, I worked at an oil change place when I was just out of high school. In the three months that I worked there I was offered jobs twice by other places that needed help. Both times I just happened to be in my uniform in other places. Once in a 7-11 (can you believe it

) and the other when I was getting new tires at a Firestone shop. I doubt you'll have problem getting another job since you already have experience. Good luck!

Its time to move up from the Quick (ick) lube, ...

Try the Tire stores next . ( the Les Swaubs here in the U.s. )
Have great apprentice programs , and beni's.plus they pay hourly w/ commissions.
the best thing is you'll learn brakes, suspension,ect.

Its really sad that those lube stores are the bottom feeders in the mechanic world. ( and its mostly the managements fault)

Forget it. Get over it. Don't dwell on it. Move on. Sounds like a job you wouldn't make a career of anyway.

If your looking for a job go to your local Fountain Tire loser.

Tell em to call Louis in Lloydminster and I'll give you a great recomend.

Most of our shops are on the look out for Techs or apprentices.

Loser...

You were in too small a company where you showed up above the radar........

You need to find a job in a big corporation like Motorola, Intel, IBM, AMD etc..... even better, get into a government department someplace....

Once settled in, you'll probably find that you can hide out in a cubicle all day and disappear at will for as much personal time as you'd like. As a bonus, you get to log onto boards like these all day and type tons of emotionally fulfilling posts. It's a comfortable life where one does virtually nothing to collect a reasonable pay check.

Canada has lots of those hiding places.....

Thanks Sax, i may take you up on that (read: i will). The job i had was only making beans so I could afford rent and trying to keep me and the girlfriend fed while im going to University taking a Human Justice degree (criminology with a social justice twist)

Guess that is why I knew how to protect my bellybutton as i got the boot. And mom didnt think my edumacation waz gunna 'mount to nothin'.
