Im thinking of taking a trip to the PRO...
« on: August 01, 2003, 09:36:52 PM »
I may within the next few weeks grab some time and go to the UK public records office and spend the day there looking at the old records.

What i thought I might do is ask if theres any particular area which some of you might want to know about who are unable to visit here. Is there a specific document you think would be valuable for AH? possibly one you know of that would be there that you would like to see?

Im going to go there and just enjoy myself but i thought well why not ask those that would love to go there but cant if theres anything that i could do to help out.

funked, I know you have a great deal of stuff and so maybe you would like to request me to look some particular subject up?

fire away with requests and ill try to do a bit of searching while im there.(im hoping to go within the next 2 weeks)

I can't think of anything I need right now though!

Hello Hazed
I have been at the PRO once on a hunt for a certain detail, and unfortunately time did not allow me to complete the search.
It could possibly be quite a job, but as far as I got, the hunt is quite much fun, - I enjoyed looking through those old records on microfilm very much indeed, and I am sure I could have spent weeks in there.
Mind you, I was also in the IWM photo and document archives on the same search....
Anyway, if you fancy a challenge from history, I will gladly send you or post the details. Mail me at burns@isholf.is, or better still (for tI get so much junkmail that unknown messages sometimes get drowned post your email here.
If you mail me put "Aces High" in the subject line, - that may help!
hope to hear from you.
 :)::):):):)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Hazed,

I have puchased a couple of docs from them before and there are a couple I would like but it is like pot luck to know what you will get.

Could you take a look at

SUPP 9/2

and

AVIA 15/2658

Make a couple photos copies of any charts or anything good. Especially climb and roll data.

OK F$UDOA ill make those two my starting point :D ,

havent made the trip but it definately will happen soon. I feel i need a particular subject matter to start with and this is the reason mainly for this post.

I am going to concentrate on LW and RAF stuff as this is more likely represented in there but ill start with those docs, photocopy them for you and scan and send them to you :)

might have to be patient for now :)

ALso HTC please feel free to give me similar document numbers and ill send them on in electronic mail or even by post if you like. You can dock my subscription for the price of posting hehe :) oh and say a little extra to pay for my lunch while im busy working for ya! hehehe (joke)

Hazed: I somwhere got a list at home regarding some PRO documents. Will see if can find it. But i am sure the overall pagenumber of those documents is to large to be fotocopied on one day.

Here is the list:

FW190:

AIR 40/151 "FW 190 aircraft
AIR 40/152 "FW 190 C, D, F and G aircraft"
AIR 16/658 "FW 190 aircraft: trials"
DSIR 23/14226 "Flight characteristics of FW 190 and Me 109 aircraft: German notes "

JUMO213:

AIR 40/73 "German aero-engines: operating instructions Junkers Jumo 213-A"
AIR 40/74 "German aero-engines: Junkers types 213 A, B and C"
AVIA 6/14555 "Jumo 213 automatic power control system"

Comparative Tests:

AIR 19/310 "Comparative performance of British and German fighter aircraft "
DSIR 23/13484 "P-47 and FW-190 aircraft: comparative performance tests at low altitude "

Oh yeah, if you can find anything out regarding Hawker Typhoon roll rate then it would be greatly appreciated.  I've tried via Hendon museum and they looked through some APs but were unable to locate anything specific.

I've been to the PRO a couple of times for family history research - I may be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here Hazed but just in case:-

1. Don't forget your passport for ID for your readers ticket.

2. If you can order any documents by phone or e-mail 2-3 days ahead of your visit as it saves time when you get there and some aren't kept on site.

3. Note the rules on what you are allowed to take into the reading rooms - security are the new Gestapo!

4. Note you CAN take a digital camera in and they recommended it to me for maps etc as its a LOT cheaper than copying.  If you have a decent res digi camera take it.

5. The restuarant food suck big time.

Have fun !!  My next trip is to the IWM photo section to find pics of my uncles tank regiment

Hazed,

There are some amazing reports in that place. One day I would luv to make it there.

AIR 64/32 is a report on the comparisons between the Thunderbolt II and Tempest II and V.

All I want to do is go and visit a pub or two that the WW2 flyers used to hang out at.

Any ideas anyone??

In the UK I could perhaps recommend one or two, but not in the states! :)
