How many rockets could the tiffie carry?
« on: August 04, 2003, 11:06:25 AM »
I found this pic, anyone know if the tiffie could carry more than 4 rockets a wing or this pic just a mock up perhaps?
"Willy's gone and made another,
Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

how many spiffys could a tiffy whiff if a tiffy could whiff spiffs?
Surrounded by suck and underwhelmed with mediocrity.
I'm always right, it just takes some poepl longer to come to that realization than others.

Look at the weathering on the airplane and the dirt on the rockets.  Looks like a 2 TAF forward base on the Continent.

"While the standard load was normally eight rockets, armament specialists had developed a 'saddle' mounting enabling a second row of rockets to be slung below the first.  The use of the saddle enabled varying loads to be carried using either single or paired racks."

Other weapons include a 520lb anti-personnel cluster bomb.

I'm trying to organise a chat with Gerald 'Stapme' Stapleton who lives about 10 miles from me.  He flew Tiffies in WW2 and if I get to chat to him then I'll ask about the 16 rockets.

Nexx, you're going to make this a great thread to watch.

Field mods for the Tiff.... gee, I wonder who'll respond?

MN178 (the Typhoon in thrila's pic) served with 609 squadron until it was lost in Feb 45, so it's almost certainly an operational fit.

Hehe Toad, I've mentioned this before and the Luftwaffle brigade got rather irate... 'nuff said! :)

BTW, it's just a reply to the photo, not necessary a request for inclusion in AH.  I use bombs anyway so not something I'm all that bothered about! :)

The Typhoon was also able to carry DTs and rockets and that isn't modelled in AH either.

The date was 25 Feb and it was shot down by flak near Weeze. The pilot was F/O JDF Wathieu who lived.

WHAT?????

All part of the anti-RAF conspiracy, I've no doubt whatsoever. Dovetails right in with the "amalgamated" Spit IX of dubious heritage and 1942 that were stuck with here! Where are the other 283  Spit variants and sub-variants that we neeeeeeeeeeed so desperately?

Mossie could also carry droptanks and rockets at the same time.

Had to drop the tanks a minute or longer before firing the rockets though.  I'd imagine the Tiffy was the same way.

you know we always seem to say that field conversions wont be in AH? well did you know the LW actually already have a 'field conversion' in AH on the 190a5?

The Wr21 rockets were not a factory modification(U), they were actually a field mod designation 'R1'

also they were only fitted to the aircraft after the two outboard cannons were removed. In AH of course you can carry them even with 4x20mm loadout. It is a little error which doesnt affect much but its still an error.

oh and if we gonna start the 'i want' business then 1000kg for 110s and some of the 190s(with tail wheel mod i think) and if i remember correctly the arado carried them and i think some me262s had bombs and rockets :)

just thought id do the typical LW request just so you guys can continue with your little run of gags :) (should i put a few 'waaaaa's in the request? :D)

personally id love to see all aircraft get their full compliment of the various weapons including the RAF DT and rocket options, this great 16 rocket mod and the 2000lb bomb for P38 if they had them. It just means more choice for us when we fly and thats nothing but a bonus for us all if you ask me.(Only if they were used in combat of course so this rules out many of the weirder LW ones)

262 with eggs was very common in WW2 and it would be a nice addition.  I was reading that it was much slower on climb than the Ar234 though and that's not brilliant if you've got full fuel tanks.

Think the article was in last months Flypast.
