AH to WB!!!
« on: August 04, 2003, 07:02:24 PM »
Warning!!! Warning!!! Warning!!!

It may well be my system, and perhaps a few others, however!....

When you remove WBIII from your computer...

Be aware that some individuals have lost DirectX somehow.

I did.

Also note the only way I could remove WB was by using their uninstaller.

I then tried repeatedly to reinstall DirectX via ATI radeon drivers, ATI control panels, and DirectX with NO JOY.

Couldn't get online to try and find a fix, (moved and had no phone for awhile)  :(

Formated C: and reinstalled windows was my final choice.

Hmmmm...

OK little more info may be in order...

W98se here.

AMD 800 with 512 ram and an ATI radeon 9000 pro 64mg

Also it only seemed to happen to a few people.  Glad you weren't one of em Zipper9 :)

Guess i'm just one of those unfortunate individuals

(Get symatic, fix it, avg, or one of the other scanners on your system  and check it )
Fix it utilitys has a good dos scanning program thats pritty thorough.

Fix it?  OK will look for it.

I've got, and had,  AdAware and Spybot S&D lookin over my system every day or so.

Also got, and had, AVG virus scanner runnin almost always.

Plus ZoneAlarm.

Ya I usually turn em all off when i'm online in AH but only then are they off.

My system ran/worked fine until I removed WBIII.  Saw another thread RE this same occurance on someone else's machine over on the AGW board.

As I said only seemed to happen to a few individuals.

If thats the case I should think most, if not all, will have no problems.  :)

I hope no one else has any problems :D

im not saying that u do have a bug ... but this is what happened to me just recentally on my other pc.
I caught a virus (that PE_lovejoy./spaces   thing ) and my virus program cured it basically ..... except the darn thing had a way of hidding in  .exe's Warbirds for one ... and it wouldnt uninstall or reinstall properly at all  it also corrupted my DX9 ...
I 'm fairly shure that it hides undetected in the uninstall .exe's

P,s the virus came from A shareware program my other half DLed from Kazaa , It was hiding in the .exe and no virus program will see it until its opened up, this version is only 3 weeks old btw.

1gig amd, gf4 vc, 384 ram,win98se.  I had to reformate to shake it .

My guess would be this only affected people that installed DX with WB... thus the uninstaller decided to remove it when WB was removed.

That could not happen Mini D, unless the WB uninstall deliberately has a DX dll listed in it's uninstall table.  This would effect everyone though.

Even if it offers you the choice to install it?  Seems it should be capable of adding/removing something from its uninstall table based on whether or not you selected to install it.

My other guess would be that this might have been a CD install vs a downloaded one.

Hmmm....  was a download install not CD

Might very well be my system.

Just had to cure a modem problem.

Seems I had installed a memorex keyboard with bells and whistles :)

Later Installed a CHPro Throttle.  After installing the throttle I got an ! in my system settings RE hid compliant keyboard driver missing.

Installed the missing kbdhid.vdx (after much looking then finding then extracting from w98se cd base5)  AND the external U.S.Robotics modem stopped working :( (#@&^%^$)  [ I live out in bad connect (many are happy if they get 24!) land now :( ]  The external gets me between 37 and 42.  Have to tune it to get same download/upload speed if I wanna sim in AH. (Skuzzy clued me in on that! thanks Skuzzy!)

So had to remove/uninstall the modem and then install again.

Plus had to reset and resave modem tuning software settings :( cause old saves when used would not allow the modem to reconnect. (said unable to establish protocals?! )

Finally it all seems to work no :D

Hmmm think I should consider building a new system with a less troublesome MB etc......

Do a search on your HDD for d3d9.dll whenever players have had problems with Warbirds it's been because they have not installed DirectX9 and WB looks for this file, if somehow WB has tied it's install with this file if and you've uninstalled WB it may have taken this file too.

Just an FYI - for all my years of playing WB (1.09 through WBIII current version - across 3 or 4 different computers) it has been a very clean install/uninstall.  It is entirely contained within its own directory, and makes VERY few registry keys at all.  It does NOT install DX9 for you nor touch your system folder at all, other than the aforementioned directory keys.

I can take my WBIII directory, and copy it from one PC to another (minus the settings sub-folder so vid card/controller settings don't get confusing) and have it start right up, without any problems.

The original port to Windows95 by Dale and the gang was nice and clean (from an end user standpoint), and all the crews since than have so far thankfully kept up the tradition.

all!

If you re-install DX remember that WBIII requires DX9, so even if you remove WBIII you will still have DX9 on your PC.

So if neccessary re-install DX9 NOT DX8

But I can say that WBIII is a very clean installation.
