Anyone know why HT gave Tiffie such a fragile radiator? Seems one ping from the rear and it's gone. Very frustrating, especially given it's brick like gliding abilities.

You should try flying the magic-one-ping-radiator Dora.

Enough time to say bugger and see how far away you are from nearest base of any kind. I would assume Dora glides alot better. Then again anything glides better then a Tiffie.

Either way, shame both these aircraft have what seems to be grossly overrated damage models as far as radiator hits.\

I don't know if the damage is overmodeled or not, but the Tiffy radiator is an awfully big target.

Next time your radiator gets pinged, just before the engine self destructs, turn your rpm's all the way down. You'll find she'll glide a bit better.;)

Even with rpms reduced the Typhoon glides like a rock :)

It is possible though to use the engine like AKWeave suggests and take the Typhoon back a pretty long distance.  I've covered more than a sector before from under 10K by using the engine like this.  It's slow going though so most people don't bother and just ditch.  The key is, the second you get hit in the rad you need to run for home and gain altitude.  Don't make 1 more pass, just leave immediately.

I think the P-51 is probably king of the glide.. that thing can go forever with the rpms down and the engine off.  Amazing.

Well i think the typhoon (and tempest) do have large radiators and id imagine they were easy to hit or more likely to catch some bullets,in a way this is a good thing....

strangely enough i just today flew a typhoon and fought an LA7 in a HO and we both hit in a real dead on HO from 2.0K right past each others nose:)
The typhoon was hit in the radiator and engine, black and white smoke and then the left wing came off.seemed like a realistic pattern of damage.
My hits hit the La7 right in the nose and then under his left wing with a single hit sprite on the underside as the bullets strayed off. His tail came off!??!? which seemed a bit silly considering where i hit.none near the tail it appeared.net lag? super tough nose on LA7? :)
At least the typhoon seems to damage where its hit :) could say thats a positive point for the model! :D

Hazed, maybe the La was shaking so much from some sort of engine damage that it vibrated the tail off.;)

What i do is when i'm hit in the radiator and start trailing smoke, gain as much alt as i can and then shut the engine off.

With the engine off i start to glide down losing lots of alt but at least im going in the right direction, even if it is pretty slow.
This gives your engine time to cool down a bit and when your gauge isn't in the red anymore, start your engine back up and try and gain some alt so you can shut it off and start gliding again.
Keep doing that and eventually you might make it back home still able to start your engine.

Pretty hard to do in a tiffy though so flapping your arms might help a little.

Glide depends a lot on actual fuel load. I usually get my radiator dead with 75% or 50% fuel left in D9, and this way Dora glides like a brick.
