Map Room Chessboard Sucks
« on: August 08, 2003, 04:33:19 PM »
Greetings !

This post represents my first squeak in 3 years.

The latest mission planning table (chessboard) in the map room is nearly unusable for creating a mission and especially for creating waypoints and flight lines.

1) The sector numbers are not legible.

2) The big (oversized) R's, K's and B's are in the way and of no use whatsoever.  Dump 'em.

3) The base/field numbers (font sizes) are way too big, causing waypoints to be too far offset from intended spot when later viewed on the clipboard map.

Suggestion: duplicate the clipboard map in the map room planning table top.

Alternately, return to the small chess pieces OR better still, to the same Icons/base numbers as on the clipboard maps. Keep 'em small.

Increase the contrast of sector numbers and background color. Ideally, white sector numbers.

Thanks,

Eagle

The chess pieces went away when the huge new maps were developed.  Since they were modelled in 3d, a map with 300 of them on it would slow framerates to a crawl.  For me at least, it made the map room unusable.

Keep the 3d chess pieces away.  Making it look like the clipboard map would be nice, however.

Agreed............I would prefer a  button in the map room that just sent the clipboard map full screen with smaller (but std) country and number icons...... still with the ability to zoom and pan........then as eagle said we can plot way points in a more accurate way in plan view.

You could strip the map table of icons totally then

I miss AW's ability to zoom in and see the lay out of a facility... so the best bomb run and approach way points could be set.

A real mission would have photo reconaisence - and these would be issues the mission planners would consider.

It sure would be good if we had a "briefing room" like map feature.. something like one of those briefing rooms, with a big map on the wall.

Click on a starting base, and then click another point to measure the distance. Click some more to measure the distances over multiple way points and stuff..

If a plane type is specified, the distance to each location, and percentage(%) if fuel used is shown.. For instance, click on "distances" button, pick a plane "Bf109G-2".. click on a strating base, click to first location, and it would show something like:

 Waypoint1: Distance 17.4miles, Fuel: 15% used

 ..

Or if possible, maybe it could become some sort of a strategic analysis room with many goody features - click and measure certain sectors, and a report on activity for the last 1hour would come out, like: "Enemy Activity: 380 planes per hour Friendly Activity: 120 planes per hour.."..

Maybe some quick stats  might be also good..

Anyhow, there's room for improvement in the maproom features. Currently, it is rarely used. Maybe in the future, more practical stuff will be available..

Yes, briefing room ("holding area until mission starts") would be fantastic to better coordinate the mission too....for assigning of targets, altitudes, etc...very cool idea.

Agree, zap the chess pieces.
