New Cpu

Been looking to build new cpu with all new components and here is what I have come up with. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Motherboard- Asus P4P800 with the 865pe chipset and onboard 6ch audio
Processor- P4 2.8ghz C
Memory- 1GB (2x512)Corsair 3200 with platinum heat speaders? or which heat spreaders are best, not sure ?
Harddrive- either a Seagate 120gb ata 100 7200rpm 8mb cache or a Seagate cuda 80gb sata with 8mb cache 7200rpm. With the sata and this board I don't think I need the extra power supply or controller card, is this correct?
Video- Ati 9500 pro
CDRW- Plextor 52x32x52 Black
Floppy- Mitsumi 3 1/2 Black
Case- Real Case 400w with front usb, mic and headpone

Anyone see any major problems here ??

Sno that should be a screemer but you might want a better Video card to go along with every thing else!

Like Boxboy said, you could get a better vid card. The one everyone is raving about on here is the ATi Radeon 9800 - not sure whether that's the Pro or the amateur version.

As for Seagate hard drives, I would steer clear. I helped fix up a friend's PC - he had had not just one, but TWO Seagates fail on him. Consider IBM or Maxtor instead. When you buy, be sure to download the HDD manufacturer's utility program to help you create the partition and format the thing (and transfer files if replacing an older disk) - so much more civilised than having to use FDISK and FORMAT.

Looks great to me.  I personally do like Seagate drives.  Seagate is the only brand of drive I've used that hasn't had a failure within a year in the systems I've built.  This is out of Maxtor, IBM (Hitatchi now), Western Digital, and Seagate drives.  I've had a lot of regular Western Digital drives die on me, but never a Special Edition version.

Just get a drive with a 3 year warranty, vs the 1 year warranty the standard drives have and you'll be better off - regardless of what brand you pick.

Just built a very similar system ( ASUS P4P800, P4 2.8, 800 fsb 1GB Corsair 3200, 160 GB Western Digital special addition ULtra ATA 100, 7200, 8 meg cache, ATI 9800 pro, XP pro)

The problem I have is my RAM..... I believe I am having memory crashes and I looked on the ASUS compatability list and the Corsair memory is not on there. Maybe play it safe and get some RAM listed on the ASUS website. I mean, I get crashes every 6 minuts or so.

Otherwise, your system looks REAL nice ( if you get the ati 9800)

I managed to find the video card for just under $400.00 and I found the motherboard cheaper too. I had a 400 watt PS in my old system, so I am going to use that, along with my old floppy, CD drive, and 30GB hard drive.

I've spent about a thousand dollars and put together a system that will not need updating for awhile. And although some of the parts are not the fastest, they are matched well together. I'm using my old 19 inch monitor(works fine), keyboard and mouse(ditto). I'm still waiting for the processor, i'll post a benchmark when it's together.

Two surprises for me there. One is that you've never had a Segate fail - my friend had two fail in four years, and my cleaning lady came to me for a PC build - her old one had a failed HDD - a Seagate.

The other surprise is Bloom's experience with the IBM and Maxtor. I've got one IBM, and two newish Maxtors. (Original IBM drive got porked by a virus, and cannot be used) If HDDs are as unreliable as this, I'm going to go ahead and order that DVD burner right away so I can make HDD backups.

Ok I got the new box running, here are the final results

Harddrive- Seagate barricuda Ultra ATA 120gb 7200rpm 8mb cache 8.5ms seektime  3yr warranty

Floppy drive- Misumi

Video- ATI Radeon 9800pro 128 meg

Case-Realcase with 400w ps

did you run 3dmark on it? I'd be curious how fast it is. (http://www.futuremark.com, free version for download. My p2.4 on the 865 chipset ran 11700 on 3dmark2001; I suppose if i replaced my gf4ti200 i'd do better, but hey, game never stutters so no biggie.

With 3dmark 2001 se it got 12711, I haven't done anything as far as overclocking or anything, just as it came out of the box

No Seagate failures here. Have a 30, 40 and 60 still purring .  The 30 is bout 2.5 years old now.  Only HDD failure I've had was a Fujitsu.

cool -- out of box mine hit 10,000ish but after i loaded the current video card drivers i got an extra 1500. Post your after updates scores!  I'd like to see how far you get. Did you get the dual channel ddr enabled?
