List of TEN things I like about Aces High
« on: November 28, 2001, 05:43:00 AM »
I'm sure there are more things I could add, but here is my list of ten.

  • Ease of download and installation.
  • Adjustment of settings and views is a breeze, with some settings changes being possible in flight.
  • The graphics are excellent; the land looks very real and detailed, and the texture of the sea looks just right – a great help when judging distances. I have had no need to adjust gamma, or to adjust colours, or to adjust room lighting in Aces High to be able to see other planes. The standard settings work just fine.    :)
  • Stability. I’m only about 4 days into my trial account. So far there have been no surprise changes!
  • Connections – critical in online gameplay. I have recently upgraded to ISDN (no ADSL in my area yet    :( ) and in AH I see none of the warping, screen stutters and freezes that are rife in some games. By playing online combat games, we’re using the Internet in a manner for which it wasn’t designed, but the AH servers and connections to them seem to be handling it well!
  • score sheet written to your HDD – score.txt
  • sound – I like being able to hear the sound of passing planes, and the stereo effect. That makes the sim feel very real. I’ve implemented Mitsu’s sounds. Hehe – that includes the “Check 6” call in Japanese, but I like that too so I’ve left it in!
  • Alt+tab enabled, so that external changes can be made mid sortie if needed.
  • Having to earn the privilege of flying a Perks Plane. This is an issue very close to my heart. I don’t want to fly in an arena in which a solid wall of über planes becomes airborne to crush a handful of zekes, or an arena in which 60% of the planes being flown are Me262.
  • Finally, one of the things I like best is that AH has not lost sight of the fact that at the end of the day, it is still a game. Amongst other things, I like the way the aircraft “dots” grow to a reasonable size so that at 700 yards, they actually look like aircraft and not pieces of dirt on the screen. The Zoom feature is there and I use it when closing in for a shot. With graphics this good, I might even be prepared to settle for a “no icons” arena, should that ever become a hot issue as in some flight sims. Some might say that it’s unrealistic to have Spitfire v. Spitfire, but with all three sides being offered the same choice of planes, no side ever has the upper hand by virtue of plane choices.  I have seen what happens when realism is modelled such that one side has better planes than another. The side switching and imbalance become intolerable. I hope Aces High never goes there.

I hope to convert my account to full membership status on Saturday week. By the way, are the “Perks Planes” available to trial members? How many kills do I need to earn my F4U-4?

Yes, perk points are activated for people still only on trial-account.
Go into the hangar to see how many perk points you have. If you go into hangar right after your sortie ended you can see how many you earned on that sortie. I don't know what plane you prefer to fly but basically the less good type of plane you fly and the better plane you shoot down the more you earn.

More detailed explained here: http://www.hitechcreations.com/perks.html

Uncle Scrmbl,

If you like I can email you my check 6 files.  I have them in German, English (British accent), English (American accent), Japanese and Finnish.

Just drop them in the folder of the appropriate aircraft in the Sounds folder, rename the file to check6.wav and voila, you'll get check 6's in the appropriate language for that aircraft.

You may have to create the folders if they aren't there (you're using Mitsu's sound pack, so I assume they are.

For example, I put the Finnish check6.wav in the 109g2 folder because that aircraft is in Finnish colors.

If you, or anybody else, want them, send an email to aahola@pacbell.net
