Another thing,, sure hope the CV's will have the proper 40mm quad mount guns, player mannable...

would be cool to see some major flak in a sea-air battle...

Oh Sure RAM.

They're adding a Navy, and Aircraft Carriers in 1.05, so the obvious addition to the planeset was the Me109T.

Damn them for adding that non-representative F6F Hellcat !!!!

Verm, they could add a Swordfish or two, you know. Channel dash, with 190s covering the ships against those paperplanes  .

And some early US Navy stuff, FM-2 whatever.

While I agree that the SwordFish would make an interesting aircraft, its use in the game would be solely as a target.

Out of my memory the two largest success's of the Swordfish were not Aircraft Carrier vs Aircraft Carrier, but in CV vs Battleships/Cruisers.

I can think of the Sinking of the Bismark, and the British raid on the Italian port of Taranto.

Anymore I am missing? Was there any Operational use of the Swordfish where it met legitamate airborne opposition?

FM-2. Actually the FM-2, was from the same period as the F6F Hellcat, relatively late in the war. Your probably thinking of the F4F Wildcat.

The FM-2, came about when Grumman started producing the F6F Hellcat, but there was still a need for the older Grumman F4F Wildcat for use on smaller escort carriers. So production was shifted over to General Motors, and they produced a new varient with a more powerful engine and some other changes, and it became the FM2.

The swordfish was in service for the duration of the war.

P.S. I am reading "to war in a stringbag" at the moment.[edit] and it's brilliant.  I didn't mean to just say that i just stopped and hit submit[edit]

jmmcaul, "in service" and "used effectively in a hostile combat environment" are two totally different things

Not to take a thing away from the Swordfish crews, they were some really gutsy SOB's !!

But my point was that I can't remember they're being used in a situation where they faced not only with AAA, but determined fighter resistance, and still succeeded.

Fact is, the Stringbag sank more tonnage of Axis shipping than any other Allied torpedo bomber, that includes the Devastator and TBF.

The Stringbag also outlasted its replacement.

It wasn't active at the end because there weren't any Axis ships to sink in the theatres that it operated in.

*GROAN*

Ok, so you guys are telling me that the Swordfish would have been effective in a battle like Coral Sea or Midway?

Karnak, I would love to see those numbers of tonnages sunk, and they're source. But it would also be interesting how much of that tonnage was enemy combat shipping with modern fighter cover, not coastal freighters that were just moving live fire targets.

I have a 'friend' at school who is one of those people who believes himself to be an expert at anything

After showing him WWII Online, there were a few posts about the Swordfish (I'm fairly sure it was on the WWIIOL boards anyway). He commented that it was probably a pretty hard plane to shoot down. When I asked him why, he said that it was because the enemy planes would just overshoot it.

Mind you, this is the same guy that is convinced a Harrier can hover in the middle of a dogfight and swivel around like a helicopter.. sigh

Swordfish would be fun in WWIIOL, but not here.

Oh My....
this threat has gone from good news to which plane sunk the Bismark!  Seems to me, that Yeager was passing on good news.  Of course, the funnies came out....and had their say-
and the earlier ones were very funny.  Carrier HO in AH...Not possible... (yet)
I think we can say that any upgrade is welcome, and stop picking on the little stuff!  Damn, it's sad to see an 80 message post do nothing more than moan and cry because of the color of the bomb sight!
Let's add more features...like now, and just thank HTC for what they are doing.  No one is perfect, otherwise..we'd be flying YOUR SIM!     (can I have first crack at a carrier command?)

Question:

Would it be possible to have two main arenas?  One would run European Theatre and the other would run Pacific, with Carriers, etc.

Just adds to the realism...would look funny seeing Spitfires landing on American Carriers.

They must of remained fairly succesful due to the fact the swordfish's succesor was taken out of service during the war while the swordfish soldiered on. Frankly i think that any torpedo plane will be totally outclassed by the current planeset to a point where even worse performnace will not have that much effect, also remember the swordfish was increadiably manouvreable so it should be fun to throw around with a 190 BnZing you
