Target for Tonight (TfT) is a weekly event held by vert in WBIII.
The events take on a historical approach, i.e. recreates a battle or series of battles. Each side has objectives, i.e. to bomb the crap out of the Axis, or to sink the allied CVs, defend your cities, etc.
At the same time, you are free to do what you want with the equipment (fighters, bombers, GVs, etc.) supplied. Typically there is no CO for each side, just individuals or squads that may or may not be working together.
I think that is why it is so popular. There is a definite goal, but you can go about accomplishing that goal any way you want, or not at all. If you want to lone-wolf it looking for a fight, you can, even if it doesn't help your side at all. Or you can show up an hour late, join up a raid that is about to form, and off you go. No sign up, show up when you want. Or, you can get your squad organized with other squads to form coordinated attacks.
Typically you only get four lives for the night (TfT usually lasts 3 hours.) Unless you suck or decide to lone wolf attack on an entire squadron, your 4 lives should last most of the evening. (Me and my squaddies have been known to fly the entire TfT in one sortie, gotta love the range of the Zekes!

)
The TfTs are scored, vert makes a decision on which side won, based on whether the objective was completed and at what cost, etc.
Overall, the TfTs provide a great mix of historical events, structure and freedom all at the same time.
It's fun for the organized dudes, and even fun for furball dweebs like me.
Most WBers wish that vert could be cloned so we'd have more TfTs.
