I may be moving...
« on: August 23, 2003, 12:43:35 PM »
Well this is all happening too quick, but in the last few days I have decided to make some very big changes in my life. I have been kicking around the Idea of moving for a while, but my wife wanted to move to central Cali, not doable by me as I generaly hate people, in large crowds that is. Well 3 days ago my wife suggested we move to Montana, I wasn't sure if she was serious so I inquired a little bit and she talked to her parents (who live on the central coast of cali) and they said that if we move they are comming with us. That was all I needed as I get along with my inlaws very well. Later that day I was crusing the internet and found a nice place in the Bitter Root Valley called Hamilton, started looking for property and found my dream home, at a price I could afford. It is a 3000 sq ft 3 story log home on 25 acres that borders National Forest on 2 sides, and not one other house in sight. It has its own pond and stream with trout, large heated shop and barns. SO I am leaving at 0500 tomarrow with my father-in-law and driving to montana to look at it. If all goes well when I get back I am going to get my National Regestry (a national license for paramedics) and start looking for a job in the area, either in Hamilton or Mazoula (40 miles away).  Keeping fingers crossed

I'm sure you will have no problem finding a job. Rural areas are always in need of qualified medical personel. Just keep in mind the winter is pretty harsh in Montana. And get ready to embrace 28,800 dial-up.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I was thinking about the internet, but decided that I just don't really care, I will have tons to do any way and as it is I have only put in about 7 hours this month.  I may drop my aces high account but I have a feeling they have dsl where I am looking.  The winters in the Bitter Root Valley are about what I get here (In NE california North of lake Tahoe.  Snow and cold are nothing new to me and I enjoy a good snow storm.  The best part is it only gets to the 80's and rarely the 90's in the summer, unlike the 105 here in Cali.

Tres cool.

Sounds like a beautiful spot man, hope it works out for you.  25 acres of land OMG!  Unheard of here...totally unheard of.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

The Bitter Root Valley is very beautiful.  I spent a couple of weeks there back in 93 staying in Hamilton and working up in Stevensville (air traffic control stuff).  Stop by the Stevensville airport to get an idea of how much we didn't do there.  Talk to the airport manager there and decide for yourself if he is the craziest person on the face of the earth.  Ask him if he got his MiG yet.

I have to say "buyer beware" when it comes to log homes.  Find out how new it is, and have it inspected thouroughly before agreeing to anything.  The Bitter Root Valley is home to more abandoned (either during construction or after) log homes on the face of the earth.  Mainly because they have 3 or 4 log home companies in within 20 miles of Hamilton.

Anyways... it is some of the most beautiful country you'll see in the U.S.  The Sawtooth Mountains are right in your backyard, as are about 5 billion streams and some excellent fishing.  I hear the winters are tough, though the valley doesn't get hit like the mountains around it.

Thanks guys.  Mini D, that is why I am going up there in the morning , to look things over, the pictures look like the home is not more than 5 years old.  Would be interesting to find out why the last owners are moving.   I know the history of  log homes, so I will be careful.  I am going to look at other places as well, the minimum I will take is 20 acres and would like to have more like 100 but this place buts up against National Forest land so there is no chance of someone building next to it.

I bet you will be getting a rifle...unless you dont already own several. I think the US has almost as many weapons per person as norway.

Time to get yourself a good 4x4 if you don't already have one.

I have several rifles and 2 4x4's already.  Need to get an ATV though.  Used to race them in Reno, but I think a big 4x4 600cc will do.   I will try to post some pics when I get back later this week.

Well, puting my house on the market, bought a house in Hamilton Montana.  Found a job, wife found 2.  The house is a 3200sq ft log home, 3 story, on 10 acres that backs up to national forest.  The one with 25 acres wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but this one is.  Behind the house there is nothing but national forest for about 120 miles until you get to some small town in Idaho.  I will be moving around November.  There is 56k dialup, and that direct way sat. high speed.  It is a little too expensive right now so I will be dropping my AH account this fall.  I bet prices of the direct way come down a bunch in the next year.   Now I have to buy a 4 wheeler and a horse!

So you're right up against the sawtooths then?  I never did make it to that restaurant on the side of the hill there... though I did alot of fishing while I was there (U.S.A.F. was nice enough to cut us 1 year orders so we could get a hunting/fishing permit).
