The AH Terrain Editor has been released and is available from our download page. It is more or less in open beta at this point as it still needs a few things finished up.
The beta crew did an extremely good job and were very patient with us as this project often to had sit on our backburner. Please thank AKWabbit, Fury, Jarbo, Ogre, Raxx, and Vermillion for their work in this endeavor.

The documentation they put forth on this was excellent but I haven't been able to complement that work with a good job of editing and formating. There were also late changes and additions to the editor that haven't been covered in the docs. The docs will continue to be revised and player contributions are welcome.

Also be sure to check out Ogre's webpage. Our terrain data is in an open format that allows other parties to write programs for it. Ogre has an excellent utility that allows for USGS data to be imported into the AH format, saving terrain designers a lot of time and effort. A link to his page is located in the download section.

Ok, excuse my stupid question, but what good is this terrain thingamabob anyhow?  Will you be able to implement your terrain into the MA or SEA?  If not, what use is it?  I've never flown head to head, and if that is the only place it could be used, wtf is the big deal?

BagPiper - go HERE and you'll see a bit of what the possibilities are.

Sure, it would be my guess, not having seen the editor yet (and oh how cool!), that terrain will indeed initially be for offline and H2H use...

However, what the terrain editor allows is user-created specialized terrain for scenarios and special events. It would be my guess that really good terrains - similar to that referenced above - will most likely be adopted for general arena use.

This really is a cool thing.
