My Commando Operations

If you read/study the history of the Eastern front in WW2, or are interested in intelligence operations in WW2, read this book. It's by Otto Skorzeny (the CO of the Waffen-SS 'special duties'/'commando'/etc.) unit. The guy who lead the jail break to free Mussolini.

Be prepared because he is a little bit of a Hitler apologist ("No way that Hitler was 'plotting to wage war on Europe in the early 1930s", etc.). Alot of what he says is technically true when it comes to Hitler, but I got the feeling it was being used to make him out to be less evil than he truly was.

Maybe it's kind of understandable - Skorzeny reported directly to Hitler for roughly the last half of the war.

What really makes the book worth reading is that when he talks about what he actually worked on - intelligence, counterintelligence, and unconventional operations - he goes into 'strictly business' mode. He has a great analysis of Russian spying (especially the 'Red Orchestra'), the political aspects of Canaris and the other 'old school Germans' and their betrayal of Hitler and the Nazis, etc. Also, Skorzeny has had dinner with almost everyone of note when it comes to political/military/etc. intrigue and WW2. He quotes from conversations with David Stirling, von Papen, numerous Soviet counterparts, etc.

It gives you a very thorough view of the intelligence war against the Russians through the eyes of a senior German CI officer. Something that is pretty rare to find in a book.

Also, the editor does 'clarify' with decent accuracy when Skorzeny starts to 'wax political'.

If you read WW2 and/or intelligence history it's a good one to have in your collection.

'For what it's worth'

p.s. If you do read it let me know what you think. There's a couple of things in the book that I'm really interested in seeing if people are as surprised and/or doubtful as I am.

(edit: added p.s.)
