Windoze HELP!

Ok, I know this might not be the appropriate forum, but I am desparate and need help.

I bought a barebones system for my boss, which included an Asus  (SIS chipset) mboard and Pentium Celeron 2.4 Ghz. I installed Win98SE, with the intentions of upgrading to XP Pro. The computer keeps locking up on me, sometimes on the boot, sometimes during the install of XP Pro ... I have to hard reboot everytime. ANyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Sounds like (hopefully) it may be a ram issue.  Uhmm..did you install all the INF files for the chipset from the motherboard CD?

I have 256mb RAM ... yes, I installed the mboard drivers. Although I guess I could go to the website and find the new ones? I installed all drivers from the CD - nothing.

Some boards can be picky with RAM. I would try another brand or pull one from another system and try it. That's the first place I would start.

Sounds like ram or the motherboard. I lean towards the motherboard as I have had to replace so many new ones lately.

Well I cannot imagine it is the RAM. I mean we bought the system barebones, preassembled from a computer company that we do business with on a regular basis. They would not have sold us RAM that was not compatible with this mboard.

I'd be inclined to think maybe there was a problem with the mboard, but 98SE installed ok ...

I recently purchased an Asus A7V8X motherboard. I couldn't install XP on it either. Gave up and went with 98se.

Disable the LAN card in the BIOS.

I'll bet it's a SiS 900, if so you won't ever get XP to load with it enabled.

I was ready to pull my hair out until I figured this out. :)

have you checked the power supply?.  i have had similar things happen many times before when the powe supply was not up to the task.  i would try switching it out and try it again.

Looking at SiS's product specs for the 648FX, it says it supports Pentium 4s but doesn't mention Celerons.

Seems like the chipset running that board is for Pentium 4s with HyperThreading and not Celerons.

Check the kneuter valve on the power supply. If thats not the problem try adding three turns of wedge to the rear sway bar and taking 3 pounds of air pressure out of the right front tire and taking 10 pounds outta the left front. That should allow you to get around the short tracks a little better without fighting it all night long. Plus you might wanna try using a little higher octane fuel as well. :D
