Problems w/ my new TM Top Gun Platinum...Help!
« on: August 09, 2000, 01:18:00 AM »
Just bought a TM Top Gun Platinum to replace my aging PFCS. Physically connected it to my rudders (TM RCS) and throttle (TM WCS MkII) and got a "Not connected" message Control Panel's "Game Controllers" utility. Anyone   know what the problem might be? The set up worked fine when I had my PFCS installed instead of the TGP. Thanks in advance.

How do you have it all connected?  What are you setting it up as in Windows?  I don't know exactly how that thing works internally, but the built in throttle on it works off of the X2 (rudder) axis and should be ignored if you plug it into the WCS Mark II.

How you have the WCS programmed will affect what you set the controls up as in windows.  Analog or digital throttle...Analog or digital hat switch.

Thanks for responding, SOB. I've tried setting it up in Windows as "Thrustmaster Top Gun Platinum w/external rudder;" I've also tried other device names too.  If I install it as a "2-axis, 4-button" generic joystick, it shows it connected, but the 4-way hat doesn't work. I have the TGP plugged into my WCS MkII, which is plugged into the rudders (TM RCS), which is connected into my gameport (which shows no conflicts in Device Manager).  This is the same set up I was using with my TM Pro-FCS, and it worked fine.

The WCS MkII is set up for digital throttle and analog hat (same as before).

RoJo have you tried using the old configuration and just plugging in the new TM stick???  I think that might be the ticket?? I have TM stuff for along time and it was touchy setting it up in Win95

BigJim: Yes, that's essentially what I did.  The physical connections are exactly the same, as is my WCS programing.  I tried selecting both the generic TM Flight Control System and the TM Top Gun Platinum in Control Panel's joystick set-up untility...neither worked.  Very frustrating that two TM products should be incompatible like this.

Rojo, I had the same problem you described, except I didn't have a WCS. I could get the platinum to recognize when it alone was plugged into the gameport, but not with my RCS.

Ended up fixing my PFCS yet again and returning the platinum :/

Hi there,

It's "nice" to know my problem was shared. I have a Tmaster RCS and have been using it for a few years with CH sticks and now a Saiteck stick. I bought a tmaster platinum pro and hooked it up. No go. I set up the boxed drivers for the joystick and the panel to set up the joystick. No go. I called tech support. They said it should work. I explained it to them in smaller words. They had me send it back to the store. I got another one and tried to set it up. No go.

I have tried the old settings, new settings, new install of drivers, searching for new drivers at Tmaster, new sound / game card and finally just put the stick in the corner of my computer room. I will not buy another tmaster product again.

I am now looking to get a complete CH setup as I have the throttle now. I just need a new stick and the rudder pedals. Unfortunately there is no local store that sells them. Eggheads price for online ordering is way too high.

There is a definite shortage of rudder pedals on the market now. It looks like most manufacturers are placing rudder "twist" options in the stick and I would rather have a REALISTIC setup since I fly for real.

I hope you find a cure as I hate having a brand new stick I can't use. I wish I could help.

Try www.buy.com  for CH Products , just do that search (CH Procducts) for list . I have had good luck , another
AH player (funked I think   )sent me there . I like their pedals and ProThrottle but the sticks without the 8 way hats or like the Fighter stick it's so far on the the joystick to be almost unuseable .

cheers spro

Rojo,

Sounds like you're doing everything right.  Try plugging the Top Gun Platinum in by itself, and see if it works that way.  I just cracked open a TGP that I have, and I didn't notice any real cicuitry inside (just direct analog), so I doubt if it's any kind of incompatibility...probably the hat switch is just defective

If you go for a different stick, the X-Fighter is pretty nice.  Still TM, and basically the same as the rest of the FCS types, but it had a slightly bigger handle and a different type of centering mechanism...feels kinda nice.

Hope it all gets worked out for ya...if it does, you might wanna go to http://www.stickworks.com  and download CTFJ.  It's a great little utility for making sure the values for your stick and rudders in Windoze are properly centered after calibration.

Oops...just took a look at my TGP - it's got the same type of centering that the X-Fighter does!
