If you can make toast, and follow instructions its not that hard.  If cost is a primary concern, you can go VERY cheap and still get a very fast machine.

On the Ultra easy Ultra Cheap:
   Buy a pre-built Emachine T2341 for $399 (it has a nice athlon)
Install an extra 256 stick O ram $40
Install good AGP card to match (GF4 TI4200)$140
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Thats under $600 and it will be great for most games and should even play HL2 and Doom3 reasonably.  Keep in mind a larger HD would be nice too...but you can just add the one you have now!  Ive got this as my 2nd gaming computer, and it screams for the price.

I'll probably put together a Barton core Athlon and a Radeon 9800 Pro for AH2, HL2 and other newer games.

Word and C++ just doesn't demand it though.;)

Just recently updated for quiite a low budget really. Funnily enough I ran out of spare cash for a new 'Box' but managed to change almost everything inside it! hehe

same old dusty cream coloured dreary tower case but a lovely 2.2GHz Athlon, Great AK77-8XN mobo (400mhz FSB) 512K of 400MHZ DDR RAM Memory, fast little 40 GB 7200 rpm 133ATA Harddrive, Radeon FDX 8500LE Graphics card.

So now if i get any slow down I'll just wait a bit then buy one of these new generation cards like the 9800 pro Radeon or FX5900 Nvidia types to get it up to very fast standards. But for now im well ok for any game ive bought. Runs graphic intensive games like IL2 for instance at very smooth speeds.AH2 im hoping will be fine with my present setup.

(Half Life2 is a real test!, have you seen the demos or films of the faces etc in it? simply amazing! very graphics intensive but so real looking.I suggest you all go look at the movie clips for it if you want to see how your computer will run it.)

I'm building a new box at the moment as it is, but certinly not for AH2.

Unless I've missed some news,  I think we've yet to see any real screenshots from within the game or even better a movie or two. So it's hard to say what level AH2 will require.

But given AH current engine and a step up for them might mean we are still some generations back from the later flight sims we've been seeing with the IL2 series and soon to be released Lock On Modern Air Combat.

So unless you are only getting OK frame rates at the moment, don't think AH2 is going to require any big hardware investments.

Only wish LOMC allowed you to fly the helicopters. Though A10 should be a blast.

Unfortionatly i have to get a new box, my current laptop IBM Thinkpad 866mhz P3m and 16mb card is good enough 30-50 fps @ 1024*768 for Ah but i have no illutions that it will do for AH2

Im gonna have to get the cheapest components possible..

Anyone think a radeon 90/91/9200 will do with a xp1800 processor and 256mb ram?
Im gonna have to run it at the LCD's native res @ 1280*1024/75Hz

Only thing im gonna spend abit of money on is a good motherboard (sata/firewire/usb2/lan etc) and psu for futureproofing.

I just bought a TSR-80 at a swap meeting - great deal, I practically stole it from the guy!

Can't wait to get AH on it and fly!

Does any one have AH on casette tape?
I'm still trying to figure that out.

12) start system - it should go directly to BIOS to confirm your processor speed. In BIOS - set BOOT order to CD-ROM first, HD- second. Leave everything else at default, for now. Put WINXP in CD tray, Save and Exit BIOS, which will reboot system.

Wonderfully writen BBGUN, very simple to read but this is where I got stuck :(

I read your post on the WB BB the day after I put mine together so it took me like 6 hours without any extra instructions besides what came with the MB. If I only would have known about that MAXTOP case from NewEgg ahead of time I would have bought it.
Instead i got a

DreamStar case with a 400 PSU for 48 delivered

A MSI k7n2g with onboard video for 80 on Ebay to save some bucks

and used all my old componants from My Emachine
CDR  DVD Floppy and 80 gig HD,,, tossed the old 250PSU but bought only a 300 watt Enermax which may have been a mistake since the case has so many lights on it.

I ran into 2 probs

#1) Case had raised bumps in it to place the MB on that match MB holes and only 3 of those brass spacers were included, I used 2of them. I was not sure what I could do if I needed to keep the MB off those spacers so I just set her down on them and continued to build. I screwed only the 2 spacers in and seems solid enough not to move at all.

CDR DVD share a rounded IDE and the HD is on a duel ribbon that I used the top connector to plug in in with thinking that was the primary.
CDR DVD share a power strand from the PSU and the HD has it's own which may have been labled extra on the plug or maybe not (away from that machine right now , can't remember but it's on it's own strand.

#2)  HERE"S THE MAJ. Prob

SYSTEM won't boot.

I get a blue screen that says something like
If this is your first time seeing this error mesg then retart your computer.....if not run a check scan disk or something  remove any newly replaced hardware or harddisk controlers, check for viruses and blah blah blah

Then I get a black screen asking me what i want to do.
Boot normal...  does not work
Boot safe... does not work
Boot last systen configuration that worked... have not tried.

I used my old HD since the MB had fried and was going to send it back to Emachines to be refitted with one but for some reason totally unknown to me......My cat pissed in the open case before i packed it.   The cat has never pissed in the house  er  on the house I should say.

Well anyway I figured Emachine would void the warranty so I didn't even waste my time and bought some new parts.

Yes the puter was plugged in at tthe time but not on. From what I could see he got 2 old PCI cards and the wires in front of the the Cpu  heatsink and fan.  The fan was untouched as far as I could tell.

Telling the story makes me want to remove 2 more of the lives the cat has left but I am a little closer to telling it with a cracked smile on my face if I can make the new set up work.

Does using the OLD HD have anything to do with it and should I use the old configuration?  BTW I'm running XP on the 80 gig HD but want to add my OLD HD loaded with 98 a little later... can I do that?

Well, I hope you can Help... I'm really needing some advice at this point.

Nilson heres the best card for budget Radeon 9600 /9600 pro
you should be able to pick one up cheap. New range from radeon to pressure the FXcards.Really good value and with your 1.8 it will be very quick and handle AH2 pretty good i bet.

also get yourself a 512mb ram stick at the fastest clock speed your computer supports. Get double sided or 2 sticks so you can take advantage of any bios mem bank interlacing features(faster)
if your old mem is slower dont use it. RAM is the cheapest its been for about 7 years (from memory -no pun intended)

Buy now or regret it when the prices rise again.

Intel:

Abit IS7 £80 (sterling UK)

MSI K7N2 DELTA ILSR (£90)

Processors:

Athlon XP3000+ Barton (£190)

Western Digital 120GB (8MB cache!! 7200rpm) (£90)

Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9 80GB (8MB cache 7200rpm) (£69)

Western digital Raptor 36GB (10,000 RPM!!!!smal capacity but FAST) fastest drive ive ever seen hehe designed for use in server enviroments but great for us game heads too. (£117)
