WOW New System ROCKS!!!!!
« on: September 02, 2003, 08:49:13 AM »
Well it was a forced upgrade after semi upgrading earlier this year. DSL line and computer died a horrible death on Friday between midnight and 6am. DSL line miraculously came back up today; now waiting on BellSouth tech to come check the lines here in the house..

Here are the new base system specs.

Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro
AMD 2600+ 333 Bus (retail)
512MB RAM (using old till I can replace new stuff with quality RAM today)
New Chieftec Case and 330W PS (other one got fried with old ASUS A7N8X Deluxe and T-Bird 1.4GHz CPU)
40GB Maxtor ATA-133 7200rpm 8MB cache

Old stuff added into nex box:
GeForce Ti-4400 128MB

I don't really put any faith in 3DMark scores; so I am not going to test it but I can see a massive improvement just based on the CPU. The mobo is based on the chipset setup as ASUS A7N8X Deluxe and the onboard sound knocks your socks off. Now I gotta get new SPEAKERS!

Gotta download AH now since its sitting on a dead hard drive.

Forgot to add this. After playing Black Hawk Down for about an hour this morning I didn't go over 38°C on CPU and 35° System Temps. 4 80mm fans not counting the one on the power supply and CPU HSF. 2 stacked in rear of case and one on my 40GB drive and the other stuck in the lower fan slot.

I would say be careful of that 80GB Maxtor drive. I have had three die on me in the last 12 months. The most recent was the last RMA drive I got back from them. I haven't had any trouble out of their other drives but that 80GB has been problematic for me. I have used it on an ATA-133 Promise Controller that came with the drive and on ATA-133 connectors on the motherboard. It would take 3-4 minutes just to show open up and allow me to place data on it within Windows. I never could get it to be the boot drive in any configuration and I haven't been able to use it in a Raid configuration with any other Maxtor ATA-133 drives I have.

I was seriously looking at a P4 setup but they wanted $190 for the P4P800 motherboard I wanted and $330 for the 2.8 P4 I wanted as well.

Not now SNO and that is where I was going to buy them from. However when I got home this past Friday my wife said "Why smoke is coming from our computer?" God love her but she didn't think to turn it off. The CPU was cracked and BLACK right in the middle of the CPU holder where the HSF had died and it took the motherboard with it but the power supply had also shorted out and toasted itself. Needless to say it being a holiday weekend I wasn't getting to Newegg either with my sole ADSL connection shot to hell like it was Friday morning.

So I broke into a run for the closest store on Saturday morning and was relieved to see they had this Gigabyte board. They didn't have the Intel setup I wanted even though they could have gotten it in by today. The "Computer Builders Warehouse" store here in town was the high dollar guys on everything but the case. So I bought the AMD stuff and am back in business with some new RAM they ordered in for me yesterday. They got my some Infineon 256MB PC2700 (turns out they ordered me DDR400 :D according to Infineon's website "256Mbit (32Mx8) DDR400 (3-3-3)") sticks in and they are working great.

Well its a shame that DDR400 RAM will not work on this board. Supposedly there is a BIOS update that allows it to run but I haven't found it yet.

Thanks Pfunk. I had downloaded and run but that was using PC2100 RAM and never thought to check it out since I had read last night about many people having those same issues as I had. On the same forums as well.
