Republican Memo: It's the Economy, Stupid!
« on: September 27, 2003, 11:32:21 PM »
From The New York Times
Quote
Three straight years of tax cuts, the president's tonic for whatever ails the economy, have not improved the jobs picture but have led to the largest budget deficit in history. Further tax reductions between now and the election are not in the offing.

"They are biting their fingernails," said a prominent Republican economist about the people he talks to regularly at the White House.

Seems that giving tax cuts to the rich didn't work, so let's fix it with Bigger Government. Atta Boy Dubya!

Read an article yesterday that said "It's not the economy, it's the war stupid!" Was actually aimed at the Labour Gov in the UK but could be the same in the US soon too.

Please define "Tax cuts for the rich".  I got a tax cut... I'm hardly rich.

Oh wait... we're nearing election time so reality has no bearing on whats said right?

The Democrats will create jobs by taxing the "rich" businees owners , raising labor costs, and providing medical care.

Correct?

The tax cuts Mr. Bush worked so hard for might have led to more jobs more quickly if they had been aimed more at low- and moderate-income households, Mr. Dudley said, because those people are the most likely to spend their tax savings.

no, they'll tax the rich in order to extend the uneployment benefits for those who lose their jobs because the taxed rich close their businesses.

If the current tax structure causes them to lose their business they never should have been in business in the first place.  Noone was closing down buysinesses because of taxes when the economy was good, were they?

It is more likely that the bigcorps will lay off workers to increase or sustain profit, while the few at the top make millions per year.  Think about it

You should understand that most businesses (small businesses)in the US start with no guarantee they'll survive no matter how well prepared or executed their business plan. Taxes break many of the very many struggling to survive.

Exactly. That' is their purpose. The company is not started as a community service to give away jobs. Their only purpose is to make money for the shareholders. Duh...

Think about that!...

THe purpose is to make money, true.  But I dont have to sit here and watch thousands of employees get laid off and the top brass gets fat salaries and bonuses.  It is perfectly in their right to do so (or they would be sued or jailed) but it isnt morally right.  It is a sign of the decay of our civilization, where greed is king.

ITs wrong and I dont like it.  Combine that with the globalization of manufacturing jobs (example Levi strauss is no longer making jeans in the US or NAmerica) and what you have is a situation where there is no trust between the worker and the company her works for.  The worker is supposed to bust his bellybutton for a company that will lay him off in a heartbeat or export his job to Guatemala.

God help him and his family if he does lose that job, as the social safety net erodes thanks to "welfare reform" and cutting head start programs, etc.  Plenty of money for the documented failure known as DARE though.  god help us all

Im a small business owner too and the only taxes that really concern me are payroll and self employment tax.  My business organization is set up as an LLC, so I do not pay taxes on money that my business brings in - after business deductions (including payroll) any money left over is considered personal income, and that is taxed just like anyone else.

If you are a small business and taxes other than payroll are a problem you should reorganize - especially if you are curently some form of corporation.

The city does tax my business income, but it amounts to a couple hundered bucks per year
