Read something pretty funny....

Was in a bookstore reading a portion of this book about a pilot in the pacific.  He said he was back at base and they finally got some beer.  He said that the Aussie beer was hot so they put the beer in a droptank and flew it in a p38 around 30k for a few mins then came back down and all had ice cold beer lol.

In Tommy Blackburn's "Jolly Rogers" book about VF-17 they do this too. They have to move from one island strip to another, and all their transports were full, and they figured if they sent their stash of beer on a ship, they would never see it again.
So, they took all the ammo out of one fifty cal from each wing of each of their Hogs, and used the empty ammo cans to load 2 cases of beer per fighter.
Just before landing, they went up to 30k for 10 minutes, landed, and handed their delighted ground crews an ice cold beer each.
Would have made them immensely popular with the ground staff at the new strip I would reckon :)

Jeret occasionally did the same when he was in Southeast Asia in the late 60s (beer that is, not ice cream).

Johhny Johnson (I think) used to pick up barrels of beer and fly them back to Europe (post D-Day) attached to the wing bomb racks on a Spitfire.

The Beer barrels on the hardpoints on the Spit was a fella by the name of Art Hewet I believe. He flew with 441 SQN and I think ASW has a picture of his spit with the beer attached (in flight too LOL).
Reminds me of being in the Airforce in 1980. There was a beer strike in Alberta, and we used to send a Tbird (T33) on a "nav exersize" from the base in Cold Lake, to Comox (on Vancouver Island) every Friday morning. The beer always showed up cold :)
Was always amazed at how much beer you could pack into the nose of those old birds hehe.
Cheers,

I have a book which has a picture of a B-25 pilot that was flying in the buff.    Not sure if it was in the Burma or African area, but the book stated that it was common because of the heat for pilots to do that.   Can you imagine getting shot down and having to bail out in the buff.......OUCH!

Heard a rumour once that in the Royal Dutch airforce some guy did something along the same lines... he overloaded an NF-5 jet fighter with personal stuff and couldn't take off anymore.

How you possibly can do that I wouldn't know but maybe he had beer in his droptanks too :D
