What slayed me was the mention that the corporations were willing to get less-educated employees just because they worked cheaper.

If that's the trend in corporate business, then we should abolish the public education program in America.  This would accomplish two things:

(a) increase the pool of cheap labor for industry; and
(b) reduce federal spending, and therefore reduce the tax burden on workers.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

I want to correct you.  The Indians we work with are in some cases much more educated than our own workforce and they adapt very easily.

I see this trend increasing on a regular basis. I work for IBM, and in the past two years alone, I've seen customer support for two software products moved out of my location in Minnesota to India.

I've got even more interesting news. It's not just the customer support jobs heading to India, it's also software development and testing jobs as well. On the product I work on (IBM WebSphere, the underlying java engine for E-bay and other enterprise apps), we are going to be getting some additonal people, but they are not local hires. They are IBM'ers working in India. So, we now have to figure out how we can all work together considering the different timezones, etc.

Don't misunderstand the nature of my concern. I have yet to meet a person from India that I don't like(and there are a lot that work for IBM). The Indian people I have worked with have all been very smart and friendly. But, just as manufacturing jobs were farmed out to other countries with low wage workers in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, I think the IT jobs are headed in the same direction. Who would've dreamed this would happen in the 1990's?

Don't be surprised if you start seeing some white collar unions making an appearance in the states in the next ten years.

No, no. I meant this part:

Convergys' long-term plan: open some call centers in smaller Indian towns, where education, competition and wage pressures are not so high.

They moved call centers to India because the education was as good as in the US, but wages were cheaper, but corporations want to go even cheaper and not hire equal-educated employees.

Companies are created to make money, simple as that. Most company owners created said company to make money for themselves. This is the American way, now that we have "free trade"  and the like we are becoming a more global economy.

We have seen the trend for years, clothing going to China, computer parts to Taiwan, now IT work, web design, programming, tech support all moving overseas.

And yet prices are still rising, inflation is still growing, on Long Island NY where I live it is almost impossible to buy a house on a single income...I know I can't (average price for a house in my area is getting close to $400,000). Unfreaking believable.

This is not really a free trade issue.  There is no realistic trade policy any government could enact to prevent companies from farming their white collar services out to overseas companies.  The end of the cold war and the telecom revolution have made it easier than ever to do business overseas.  Any politician who tells you that he can do something about is a lying bastage.

IT is only the most immediately threatened profession.  Engineering is not far behind, and accounting, architecture, and some medical research are all starting to flow overseas, too.  And of course, help desks and telemarketing have moved in large numbers.  

I'm already wondering what my next profession will be.  Maybe I'll open a microbrewery and get all you pigs drunk.
