"USA is LAGGING in BROADBAND TECHNOLOGY"

I read about it on Business week. Japs can deliver 20Mbps/sec with its broadband connection for just $25. Almost 100% of homes/appartments in S. Korea are connected hi-speed internet.

$45/mo for ~1.6MB cable.  That's download...upload is considerably less.  The price is actually $55/mo, since if I didn't have cable tv it'd be $10 more, and my basic cable is $10/mo.

I feel that i must say that i get it at that price because i was the first in my town to get bradband via cable and i get very good prices.

Whenever they introduce a new speed i also get that to test for the same amount for about a month. After that month is finished i go back to the middle choise of speed (wich would by then have jumped up a place) and pay the same amount.

Im kinda like a very happy testing person for them, but i have to give em an email every week with a report of how things are going.

59 euros a month for 1m/512k ADSL...
Could be cheaper and could be way more expensive.

The price came down just this month :D

I can say that Sweden rules when it comes to cheap broadband connections...

for 40 euros an month you can get 8 mbit ADSL connection... if you live within 600 meters from the "telephone basestation" then you get up to 26 mbit for the same price...

I think most of the US providers limit speed and still charge alot because thats what the market will bear. My cousin is a service tech for bell south and he told me thier ADSL is capable 6+ Mb. Back a year ago when I had it I was limited to 1.5 and payed $55 a month for it.

I now have cable and pay about $80 for 2Mb  and digital cable.

Here in the states there are still ALOT of areas where highspeed isn't available. Hell there are still lots of areas where phones aren't available!

I imagine if we were all packed together on some island like a bunch or sardines, it would be easier/cheaper to implement.

TIPGuy,

Problem is: a) the bandwidth costs for the ISP's, b) theres limited amounts of it.

The more ISP uses the bandwidth, the more it has to pay to routing services etc. whatever things there are to pay for and then again they usually have a limited share of the bandwidth, which again would cause slow connections for the users. (unless ISP increase the bandwidth, which again costs huge sums of $$$)

and of course they need to get profit.. eitherways, without them making profit, alot of cable/dsl users would be still using modems or something like ISDN's, because ISP's would lack the interest to upgrade their technology in the lack of money

Good point. I was quite happy paying $55 a month for my DSL as it was a HUGE improvment over dialup. Cable is a noticeable improvment over DSL and it is a bit cheaper, so I'm still happy.

For what little bit of gaming and surfing I do it works great. I don't download alot of big files, so I don't really need a 6Mb+ connection.

I grew up using prodigy on a 1200baud modem, so I'm not totally spoiled by all the latest highspeed stuff. Though I wouldn't complain if it was faster/cheaper.

Speed is not the most important thing for me either, controlling costs and beeing able to get rid of the phoneline was.

Speed is just a bonus

For me, very good quality and reliable connections are the primary considerations aside a sufficient speed (which at the moment is 1m ;))
Since alot of my traffic goes to outside Finland, mostly to europe and US, the ISP must be one with good routers to europe and US.

For that, I'm not quite confident with the cable modems, which with you're pretty much gambling whether you get a good one or bad one - as the cable modem ISP's and the areas can vary alot in the quality of connection.
So an ADSL, which is available aside a cable modem, is my choice..
