Talk me into subscribing...
« on: September 07, 2003, 01:19:12 PM »
I've just downloaded the free introductory game. I've played a similar game on Gameplay.com but was put off eventually for several reasons. Similarly with other games I've played which are online only.

Reasons which have made me give up playing online games in the past:

    • Verbal abuse
    • Kill Stealing
    • Runwaying

Are such things a problem within the game or at an acceptable level? What's the general atmosphere like between gameplayers? Is there a game always available with enough competitors?

I'm asking not just for myself, but on behalf of several others who may be willing to subscribe to the game.

All replies recieve a free Biggles Scarf and a free Smug Smile.

What the hell is runwaying?  And I am sure you won't find the other 2 things you mentioned in this flight sim.

Why not just select "online" and have a look? 14 days are free.

The introductory game is the full game. You'll get some additional maps when you log in the the areans, most of them are also available for manual download.

Verbal abuse is there somtimes. But you're only a target if you either do something bad like head-on attacks or vulches, or if you're simply better than your opponent. Flying in an evil gamey way is your own choice, don't worry about beeing so good that you get insulted for it in at least the first few years here.

True kill stealing does not happen too often. If multiple friendlies are fighting a single con only one of them is going to get the kill. It's wasted resources to do so, so they're all doing something wrong. True kill stealing where someone actually dives after a con that is going down in flames rarely happens.

No idea what you mean with runwaying. Probably some form of vulching. Yes, it regularly happens that a panzer sits next to the runway waiting for planes trying to take off. But you can see him from tower, so if there is one, just take off somewhere else. It's your contries' and therefore your own fault that you let him get there in the first place.

There are always enough players online in the main arean to find an opponent. At some timezones it might get a bit boring on the large maps, no idea how many are online then, but during Euro-evening you'll find about 300, US-evening 500 - rough estimates. Don't worry, there will be enough to shoot you down :p

You're doing in in the wrong order. First fly, then whine about it. Not the other way round ;)

the gameplay here is great... even though it has a big learning curve....  The training chat thread will get your questions ansered along with a faily quick response ... none of that 2-5 days waiting stuff here. along with training links and films.

theres around 500+ players in the main arena US primetime
    50+ in the ct arena.
special senario's played every week .
If your into WW2 flight sims this is the place to be ...

Were currentally awaiting AH2  to be released  ... updated graphics engine , along with some new arena's to play in .

Verbal abuse  = not to bad as compared to other games, swearwords are blocked in chat , but you will see the feable attempts every now and then ... .squelch players name   in the text bar takes care of that ..

Kill Stealing =  it happens ... but theres enough players that you get plenty of kills.

Runwaying=  I think you mean "vulching" shooting players as they take off .... yes this happens but only to the enemy ...and its part of war .... move to a different air field when this happens to you.

Welcome to AH and enjoy ....

    Verbal abuse
Yep, you'll find this here (and anywhere), but it's not out of control.  There are monitors in the game, as well as a built-in automatic profanity filter.  Type in a filthy word once, you get a warning...twice, you get muted for 10 min.  If someone starts acting like an angry child while there's a monitor around, they'll generally get a warning...if they continue they'll get muted or if they've totally lost control of themselves they can get booted.

    Kill Stealing
You'll also find this here sometimes, though I have only had it happen to me once or twice.  Here's the trick...make it explode and no one can steal it.  If you don't, just be happy with the fact that you killed it, whether you get the kill credit or not.

    Runwaying
If by this you mean vulching, it definitely happens and it is a beautiful thing.  By vulching, I mean killing a plane that is either on the ground or landing/taking off.  If you don't like being vulched, no problem...you are in complete control.  Don't take off from a base with enemies circling overhead and you won't get vulched.

Definitely give it a try for yourself, the two week trial is great and doesn't even require a CC#.  If you get confused, ask for help or go to the training arena and try to find a trainer.  No matter how good you are (or think you are ;)), a trainer can be a lot of help.  Good luck!

The main reason to subscribe:  it's really, really fun.  Aces High 2 is in development, so you'll get a chance to get in on the ground floor there.  You'll learn a lot about WWII airplanes, weapons, and tactics, and about flying in general.  You get two weeks of free trial, so go for it and judge for yourself.

Verbal abuse:  It happens, as will happen anywhere with large groups of people.  However, generally the AH community is a bit older than the everquest/quake crowd, and as a result, more mature.  You can easily squelch anyone you deem offensive.  Moderators boot or squelch people that are way over the line.  And if you see anything really bad, you can take a screenshot and email it to HTC.  They personally take care of some stuff.  I've never gotten into a real argument in AH.  Generally, if you don't go looking to argue, you won't find arguments.

Kill stealing:  Happens, but not enough to make me care.  There are probably 10 kill-steal whines for every actual case.  Most of the time, it's just that someone else was shooting at the same target and did more damage.  Nothing underhanded at all.

Runwaying:  if you mean vulching (shooting planes taking off), yes it happens.  Perfectly legit tactic.  Main way for Allies to kill Me262s in WWII was to get them taking off and landing.  You want to fly to the fights here, not take off in the middle of them.  Basically, if a field is vulched, don't take off there.

The people are generally very nice and helpful.  Ask for help, and someone will almost always offer you a hand.  The bulletin boards are a great source of info... you can search for others who have asked your question, or ask it and recieve multiple answers, from multiple viewpoints.  Players make great websites dealing with training:  netaces.org is my favorite.  Go there for tips on getting started.

There are almost always at least 200 players in the Main Arena (at least whenever I look).  At primetime (USA nights), you'll see 400 to 500 on.

Hope this helps.  Any more questions, just ask. :)

If you downloaded the game just start an account! no credit card needed and try it for 2 weeks... only way to find out.

There is ALWAYS a game available...  The arenas, Main, Training, Combat Theater, Duelling Arena are all open 24/7.  The Main arena at US primetime may see 500 or more players.  Even at 4 am EST, there are 150+ players online in the same arena.

If you need to be talked into flying AH after the trial, then you shouldn't. Should be able to make your own decisions if you are serious.

lets turn this round a bit:

I probably 500 get more , good kill etc for every bad word, but community is quite tight and alot of what you see or hear is between friends.

had a noob maybe once or twice steal a kill, only guys who to it regular are my squaddies, (see above point)

camping in gv's yes, vulching yes as its part of the game when bases need to be supressed for capture,

    run-awaying: yes anyone in a P-51 ;)

Well it might have been WWII airplanes but that's where the similarity ends. You'll have more pilots, better pilots and a harder FM to deal with. Learning curve is steep. You won't have a down in two weeks.

Every game has it's tards. Pretty mellow here from what I've heard of other places. I try to be a tard on occasion just to see if I still "got it".

Main thing is the trial is free. Feel free to jump online and become fodder for a couple of weeks and evaluate the tard factor yourself.

First lesson, if you put image tags on your picture address everyone will see it.

Now, you and your buddies grab planes and head out into the virtual skys and eliminate some of those darn tards..

Remember to stay together, and if you announce your location on channel one, and tell everyone your new, we'll leave you alone..

    Now wheres my scarf ??

If you mean "Runwaying"  as running away yeah some dweebs do that sometimes.   As for the community, it is very tight knit, and while there still are jerks and idiots that swear a lot most of the people that play this game are very polite.

Why would I want to talk you into subbing?

1: You'd probably just endlessly complain.

2: I really hate your BBS name ... chances are, if you picked something else for a callsign, it'd be just as annoying.

3: There's bound to be someone else for me to talk into subscribing. Maybe someone who stands a better chance of liking the game as is and getting addicted to it .... like the rest of the assimilated AH masses. Hopefully someone with connections that will give me that one break I need to make it in Hollywood as a screenwriter or maybe a gaffer.

    Arlo that wasn't very nice.

Shhhhh....after the first couple of days will start killing him in his chute. Let him do his two weeks, we'll kill him over and over to the point that he gets REAL frustrated and then his posts will get downright enjoyable

MindYerBeak ( that kinda rolls of the tongue ) don't bother with Arlo. He's a good guy deep down inside. Anyone that wants to be gaffer is ok in my book.
