So how many engines DID the Russian Air Force use?
« on: September 09, 2003, 06:47:24 AM »
Because I have a VERY bad habit of bouncing my insanely nose heavy IL-2 off of the runway upon landing and killing the engine.

I have tried a variety of techniques, braking in different ways, flaps, rudder, etc, but still it seems that when I reach 0 speed, I will bounce the nose straight into the ground.

I still get a landed.... but seriously....

Lay off the brakes until the speed is low and the tail wont rise when you brake. In R/L you don't want to use brakes until the tail drops unless you want to plow the field.

try to keep it off the ground for as long as possible. that's what makes a good landing.
of course, what do I know about landing a tailwheel???

U are correct, I can reproduce this in the Il-2 every time.  The solution is simple though, land as normal and apply brakes... as you slow under about 15mph, release the brakes and let the tail settle to the ground, then re-apply brakes and don't let the tail jump back up on you.  The tail should stay nicely planted to the ground and u won't nose bounce and break the prop/engine.

What I do, is just come in at a low speed and alt, hit x  when aprouching runway and idle engine, it should come down with a 3-gear touchdown. ofcourse you have to play with the throttle abit as not to stall

The issue with the Il-2 though is a bouncy tail, you can land perfectly but the second you stop under braking, if your tail is in the air, the tail drops, bounces, then drops, bounces higher.. etc, until the prop gets wacked on the ground.  I think the P-51 had this problem briefly a long time ago until a patch was issued.  It's hard to keep the Il-2 tail glued to the ground under braking.
