I saw it at Duxford doing its first show. Amazing sounding engine - like a tractor on acid. :)

It's the same engine used in the La-5FN and La-7, I believe (ASh-82FN).

"PERK IT! "

The LA-9/11's are the penultimate VVS prop aircraft IMO. Sleek lines. raw poer and heavy hitting guns. But it would have seen action in WWII.  In Korea surely as it began development in 1945 and production in 1946.

Definitely the best thing at Duxford this year for me. It was the only thing that took my mind off the 'other' thing that I saw that day, which was not so pleasurable.

It's a nimble fighter too - the pilot really showed that aspect off. And the speed was very impressive.

Restoration of a LA-9 has just been completed earlier this year in New Zealand. And just happens to be at the same field I fly helo's from.

Had the great pleasure of watching it at an airshow few months back where it was a site to behold and sounded awsome.

Also watched it taxi early last weekend great plane.

This picture surprised me a bit:

I always figured the F4U to be bigger ... a lot bigger.

then you might be surprised to note that the f6f hellcat is *as* big as the p-47 thunderbolt.

surprised the hell outta me when i built both in 72 scale, and the corsair is smaller in comparison.

it also surpised me how small some of the medium bombers (b-25) was when put next to a pony.  and a pony is by no means a "big" fighter. i did those two in 48 scale.
