Any sports medicine guys around?

Got a question about treating an injury.

Was practicing for our football team, running down the sidelines on a breakaway. Felt like something exploded in my right hamstring, went down like a sack of potatoes :)

Shook it off after a few minutes, have good mobility, very little pain, but I know it's tweaked kinda bad. Originally felt like a lump in my hamstring, now it's more sore than anything.

What's the best way to go about treating it? Never had a real bad hamstring injury before. My plan is: Ice for 15 minutes, then wrap for 30 minutes, ice 15 more, etc. Keep it elevated at night. Anything else I should do? I want to get back on the field as soon as possible, but don't want to injure it more.

Getting old sucks :)

Grun, just from my own experience with a bad back that likes to snap and a groin injury (don't ask...), I'd say go with ice packs if theres swelling, and at night use heat (heating pad) on the area. Heat will help the tissue mend, while cold helps keep the swelling down. Use both where applicable.

Good luck, I've heard hamstring pulls, even minor ones, take as long as groin pulls to heal, about 6 weeks min. before you're 100%.

Avoid heavy lifts on any weight lifting too  if you're going to the gym, and watch out for bench press, you can easily pull hams on bench, sounds strange, but some "arching" occurs in the hamstring when benching heavy weight. (A good way to avoid arching the hams is to draw your feet and legs up onto the end of the bench, but then balance becomes an issue as well, you probably already know this though, after see you in person :) )

Sounds like you strained or totally blew it out. Be careful, if you totally blew it it can feel great 4 months from now, but it isn't totally healed and next time you top 75% on the power scale it could go again.

Where are you living right now? If it's one of a couple of places I could dial you in with a good sports medicine doctor.

The lump could be a knot/cramp (did you eat right before playing?) or a partial tear.

I've strained them a bunch of times but never to the point where I fell over.

Give me an email address to contact you at - you're active duty USA right?

p.s. Need an answer from you in less than 3-4 hours or you aren't going to hear from me for a few weeks.

p.p.s. Specifically applicable medical experience - worked as a physical therapist's assistant for a sports medicine physical therapy outfit while rehabbing from surgery. I've also dinged every individual part of each leg to the point that I upped my daily Vitamin M dosage from 1600mg to 3200mg+ at least a couple of times. :)

(edit: added p.p.s.)

Hey Rip...I'm not Grunherz you bastich :)

Wulfie..I'm near Oklahoma City. Don't think I tore anything, I can walk just fine, but don't have much power to push off with that leg. Kinda scared me the way it popped. Felt like someone shot me in the leg.  I wasn't real hydrated prior, so I'm hoping it's more of a cramp than anything. Any supplements I can take to speed recovery?

If it's been more than 48 hrs, ice won't do any good.  Heat, ace wrap,  be very gentle with it for a few months, or you might make it permant.

Anything with sulfate (Move Free by Schiff is great). Lots of water. Lots of protein. But before all that see a Dr. and find out exactly what happened. And Medicboy is spot on about the ice. 'Ice for swelling, heat for healing'.

See a sports related Dr. If you live near a college with decent athletic teams go there and ask one of the coaches which Dr. (probably a group of Doctors to be honest) they send their players to.

Always see a Doctor first if at all possible.

Okay last post/last internet access for awhile. If you want to drive to Texas (i.e. you don't have good insurance, etc.) on a weekend I'm not there anymore but I know the guys who are going to Texas next very well and they are going to have a sharp Doctor with them.

So if for some reason you have a tough time getting to a Doctor, and you can get to Austin on a weekend (or anytime during the week if you can get on base at an Army base - which is where the guys will be staying during the week) then send your email address to FunkedUp because I'll talk to him on the phone at least a couple of times over the next couple of weeks - I'll get you the details (if needed) thru him.
