... real cheap setup, but thats all i can hope to afford for now. I may go for another motherboard tho that has firewire and sata

I've tried several AOpen motherboards but was not very happy with any of them. Good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy the ATI video card!

You might consider an Asus A7N8x Deluxe board and use the onboard Lan and Sound. If you use PC3200 RAM you can prolly up the FSB to 200/400 and that Barton 2500 will scream. It will still work at 166/333 if ya don't overclock.

Nielsen......that setup will work nicely.....I'm using the athlon XP2400 and it runs at 2gig....athlon chips usually run faster then advertised....it's in the core

How about making the CD a CD Writer? BTW Athlon prices should be coming down in 10 days when AMD launch the A64.

Thx for the reply fellas, reason for cd and not writer is that i need this ti be as CHEAP as possible.

The more parts i can find in dumpsters etc the better

With incomming baby and boat we are gonna live on almost nothing until my gf sells her appartment in oslo right before the baby spawns... Then in the autumn we are prolly gonna have a wedding and that aint cheap either

BTW..

Is there any point in getting a motherboard and ram supporting 400mhz if the xp2500+ only supprts 333mhz?

Im asking cause i have found that the apacher pc3200 400mhz ram is actually cheaper than the pc2700 333mhz ram.

Should all 3 mobo, cpu and ram be at the same speed?

I believe the cpu will determine the fsb speed. I don't think it'll hurt to have a board and memory rated for higher than what it'll be running at. You do want to be sure that the board supports your particular cpu though.

Yeah, that what i thought iron. I have heard somewhere that its important to for max performance that they all should be at the same speed but that must have been bull. Anyhow.. what does all that cl2.5 etc stuff mean?

thx Iron, ill try to go for 400mhz fsb on ram and mobo to keep it more future proof.

Ive decided to to go for asus a7n8x-x mobo, up to 80gb seagate hd and 2 256mb 400mhz apacer ram instead of the above. Ive also set my eyes on another Aopen tower with 350w silent psu and a cheap cdrw. The xp2500+ and sapphire radeon 9600pro "fireblade" stays on the list.

Life was alot simpler when i could just rely on my trusty Thinkpad...but it wont be good enough for AH2

Now...where is that money when you need it

While I've noticed no speed difference, I've found greater reliabilty with AMD chips using memory with better CL ratings. Here's a link to a pretty good explanation of memory.

It is true that performance is better if FSB of RAM and CPU are the same. Barton 2500 is 166/333. In the BIOS you can set the RAM to run at the same speed as the CPU. A 200/400 FSB RAM and mobo will then run at 166/333 with the Barton unless you up the FSB on the CPU in the BIOS, and then the RAM FSB will match. That is why overclockers use a higher FSB RAM than the CPU. Many of the Barton 2500's are running stable at 200/400 FSB giving speeds up to 3200+. Upping the CPU FSB on some motherboards creates a problem because the PCI bus speed also goes up. The Asus A7N8X locks the PCI bus speed at it's default. Even if you don't overclock, the price isn't that much greater and the 400 FSB mob/RAM will allow you to upgrade later to the 3200+ with the 400 FSB.

Correct me if I'm wrong but memory (at least DDR) is rated for speed based solely on it's ability to handle the faster clock (quality and design). Provided the memory is rated at the speed to which you set the fsb there is no benefit going higher other than perhaps reliability. Sure, if you plan to overclock the fsb your memory should be rated for it. Then again I could say the same for the cpu.
