Why do sites like CNN have popups?

I claimed nothing.  Foxnews is free.  I clicked on your hyperlink 5 times with no pop-ups and I have neither the google bar or pop-up blockers on my system.  So, I was telling it how I saw it.  No pop-ups on my end (I am NOT a registered user at foxnews) and I don't have to pay for a subscription.  Anything else?

once cached I don't think you get the pop up

Are you saying they don't?  Why wouldn't revenue from online ads be used to defray the associated costs of the online service?

No, what I was saying is that the vast majority of CNN's income is TV commercials.  Online ads do bring in revenue, that is the point of it.

I agree.  My point was that since consumers of cnn.com are not paying for the service, pop-up adds are a necessary evil in order to generate revenue to defray costs associated with the service.  I personnaly find it hard to whine about pop-up ads when I am using a service for free.

I believe Eagler is correct.  It appears that foxnews.com sends a cookie so that you only get the pop-up once a day (or some other time interval).
