I think you are missing the true, long term effect controversy: Steam.

For those that have not kept up, I thought it wise to slowly integrate them.  The story is long and ugly.

Steam, Valve's new distribution method is a memory active program that is always connected to Valve's servers.

It will be the only way you can get new content or play multiplayer their games.

It might work for the consumer, but then again, it can also be a total disaster that will make using their software a pain in the ass.

Not only that, but since Valve and Half Life 2 are such influential names, other companies might try to follow their example and release little Gator like memory programs of their own, required to play their games.

Mark my words. Half Life 2 will change gaming for the better. But with it comes a very annoying pandora's box.

No, its not spyware. But if it was, nobody could do anything to stop them. And that opens the door for a lot of companies to try it.

Plus, its extremely annoying to have to use one medium as the only way to get information or play. For example, playing on lan is impossible unless there is an internet connection.

As far as I know, I order to play single player, you must also be online so Steam can connect to the Valve servers and verify your key to see if they will allow you to use their software.

Now that is crap.  LAN parties will become extinct if this actually happens to future games.

No, ripping software will become extinct.  If you have a LAN party setup, my guess is is that there is an internet connection available.

Wrong. Piracy distribution groups will always find ways to pirate the games. They will rip through the code and make Valve's software run independently of Steam. This is already underway.

The ones who will be truly affected is the legitimate user.

Well, copy protection schemes are really only meant to make it more difficult so the casual user won't be able to hand out copies to friends.
Really cannot blame Valve for this.  They have spent the last 4 years developing this title.  Although Gabe does not look like he has missed many meals, I suspect they really need to get the cash flow back up, as it will be a while before they do another release.
This title is, without a doubt, the most sophisticated game ever released, in terms of what the engine is doing and what it is capable of.

What price would you have payed, in Counter Strikes golden time a few years ago, to stop the bunny hopping, wall hacking, bot aiming, head shot 40 kills, 0 death CHEATS?

You dont need Steam to play LAN.

You dont need more than one CD to play locally on multiple PCs.

I read this on the HL2 boards.

Get  a Radeon 9800 Pro.

100's FPS in AH.

Just so happens to be the best card in the world for most new games especially HL2.

So if you wanna R00X00r then go the 9800 Pro and pwn d00dz!

:lol  :D
