A friend of my dad's sent this to him.  Unfortunately I don't know the story behind it

That's really really strange..

Doesn't it seem odd that the tree withstood the impact without breaking?

Wow.. what a tough little tree.
Looks more like something you'd expect against a solid steel pole.

I was VERY lucky in 1984. I survived, almost without a scratch (concussion, minor lacerations) an almost identical accident. My 83 Dodge Charger 2.2 hit a 14 inch elm tree 37 inches off the ground at over 100mph. It cut the tree down and ejected me 60 feet from the impact. It just wasn't my day to die, but God DID get my attention.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Chaos68, the front of the car isn't there, along with the engine, trans, front suspension, etc, and most of the floor. You can see both A-pillars still at the tree, from there forward tore loose it looks like, the occupants were prolly with the rest of the car, or spilled out. I'd guess the reason there aren't pics of the rest of the car is that it isn't the scene anymore. Prolly ended up wadded up a few hundred feet away. A rollback wrecker prolly already scooped it up. They' ll have to cut this part of the car loose from the tree or cut the tree down.

Right, there are only 2 tires and no motor there, which is probably why the tree wasn't knocked down.

i've seen something similar, only the car was cut clean in half, almost as if with a saw....perfect front half and back half. it was a small 4 door.....very strange that it broke away as it did.....surprised it didn't look more like that image above.

most modern cars are unibody with front subframes.... meaning.. the car is all one piece, body and frame, except the front clip (cowl forward) which is bolted on).    Never liked that idea.

I have a few pictures from when I was a police officer at various accident scenes. They're probably too graphic to post here, but I've got a few of cars wrapped around lightpoles, etc...  Believe me, it's entirely possible fellas.
