Tandem aircraft controls, i.e. a trainer for Aces High
« on: September 19, 2003, 05:29:44 AM »
HT,

Yesterday while in the PC-7, I was thinking how cool it would be to have a tandem aircraft in Aces High, i.e. dual controls etc…. just think of the training possibilities, not sure how much work it would be but, it would be a blast to fly.

Cheers

"I thought you had it" :D

Due to the impossibility of making the 2nd guy's stick move in his hand while the 1st guy flies, there'd have to be something else to give the trainee the sense of how the instructor was moving the controls.  There'd also need to be a command to swap control of the plane back and forth between them.

The only thing I can think of is a "follow the pointer" system.   I envision this as a HUD display up in the main forward view area and it would only work when you did NOT have control.  There'd be like a big dot (say 1/4" wide) on the screen (say in blue) that moved up/down and left/right to show the instructor's stick inputs.  There'd also be a diamond of similar size and color that moved left/right across the center of the screen to show his rudder inputs.  The student's controls would make identical marks on the screen, only in a differnt color (say white).  Only the instructor's inputs affect the plane--the student is just trying to keep his dots lined up with the instructor's to get the feel of how much stick and rudder to use.

Of course, internet lag would be a major problem with all this....

I think it is great idea - but I think we should make Master Pilot and Trainer - if trainer tochs the stike he takes command and if he leaves it the Master Pilot. Good for landing practice for new pilots. By the way in Bomber gunner would be aviable to change killed/wonded pilot - would be nice.

Having duel controls I think would be kind of hard to code into the game and could lead to a lot of griefing situations.  What would be great for training purposes is if the observer on a plane could see the flight instruments move.

You can see instruments move - flight instruments (alt speed G climb raito) - no guns and fuel instruments. The code? I do not think it is just to switch the source of input

Not all the flight instruments work for the observer.  The only ones I think work is the speedometer and altimeter.

Well, HT could use a small window to show the current position of the instructor's stick. Say, a box like the text buffer with a bright green dot in the middle. Whenever the instructor moves his stick to execute a maneuver, the tin horn would see the green dot move to reflect it. Kinda simplistic, but it'd work.
