JUST SAY NO TO THE GeFORCE FX!

I can't stress this enough.  nVidia makes awesome cards, but they took a wrong turn with the FX line, including lying to consumers about the cards capabilities.

Currently the GeForce 4 'Platinum' series (not MX) and the ATI Radeon 96/97/9800 series offer outstanding performance.

IMHO, the FX is not worth any price.

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro for the last few months with 128 MB and I consistently run 85 FPS on AH at full resolution.  This card was less than $200 new and will run any game out there in the foreseeable future.

NVidia is not inherently bad.  I think they make outstanding chipsets, both for motherboards and GPUs.  I just think they went wrong with the 5xxx FX series cards.

PS the answer for the price issue on the 4200 and 4800 is the 4200 is a 'Titanium' (Read: top of the line) card with really fast memory chips and processor.  The 4800, despite a higher number is an SE (consumer) level card with 350Mhz standard speed RAMDAC memory.

GeForce 4 Titanium is the best thing Nvidia has going right now.

so if were to get the Ti4200 above would it be comparable to the top of the line ATI?

how far behind the current best video card avali is it?

i only ask because im so out of touch with the newest video cards.

last i knew the geforce ti4400 was $390 and the best avail (myabe a year ago?) and ati had some driver issues.

Here's a pretty good article comparing performance and pricing.

As this article concludes, the 9600 Pro offers just about the best bang for the buck.  I don't think anything compares to the 9800 for all out performance right now if you don't have a budget.

All I can say is that I have the 9600 Pro and it does an outstanding job not only with AH but all of my games.  I have been just a little disappointed in nVidia lately, but I still think they are a great company.

Have had Voodoo and Nvidia cards in the past. Got an ATI 9700 Pro about 4-5 months ago I guess. Have had no problems with it and the graphics kick. Skuzzy recommended it... nuff said. Also from what I hear AH2 will rely more on the graphics card than the processor as it does now so couldn't hurt. Good luck.
