Thx Superfly for shore batteries
« on: May 15, 2001, 12:07:00 PM »
I just visited the Hawaii Army Museum again this past weekend (haven't been there since I was a little kid), and saw that the museum building was actually part of a shore battery emplacement during WWII and just prior to WWII.  It's main armament were a couple of 14" disappearing guns.. they would raise/lower on their mounts for firing/loading.  Heh, amazing how much more I understood what was there this past weekend compared to when I was little. Anyway, during the war years, our coasts were fortified with guns and emplacements as a precaution to invasion. Diamond Head, that famous crater you probably see when someone shows a picture of our Waikiki beach, also contained gun emplacements. It's an elevated spot practically right behind the shoreline so it was perfect.  Most of these structures are still around; they actually tried to take down the structure that is now the Army Museum, but the contractor reportedly gave up in frustration because it wouldn't fall from hits with the wrecking ball.

Just wanted to give a little bit of history and say thanks for your efforts   I couldn't memorize more details, but can easily find out more if necessary

Should be fun to have these.  Looking forward to storming beaches... or preventing the storming.

if you are ever in san francisco check out the shore batteries along the marin headlands and near the presidio. there are miles of installations, bunkers and tunnels.they are long since abandoned and you can even dare your friends to go crawling around in them at night

no fair!  They sealed off all the WWII era bunkers and stuff here.  They did leave one 14" disappearing gun to look at though.  2 5" (I think 5", could be wrong) guns too.

BTW, that's at Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach.  Originally a Civil War fort and was used through WWII.  Right across the pass into the bay is where NAS Pensacola is.  You could get a great view from the fort area of the Lexington (and later the Kitty Hawk and Forrestal) when they were docked.  I miss having a training carrier here.

Good job SF!  They look great and I can't wait to man them    It's a pleasure to be in a sim where things actually happen.
