I just visited the Hawaii Army Museum again this past weekend (haven't been there since I was a little kid), and saw that the museum building was actually part of a shore battery emplacement during WWII and just prior to WWII. It's main armament were a couple of 14" disappearing guns.. they would raise/lower on their mounts for firing/loading. Heh, amazing how much more I understood what was there this past weekend compared to when I was little. Anyway, during the war years, our coasts were fortified with guns and emplacements as a precaution to invasion. Diamond Head, that famous crater you probably see when someone shows a picture of our Waikiki beach, also contained gun emplacements. It's an elevated spot practically right behind the shoreline so it was perfect. Most of these structures are still around; they actually tried to take down the structure that is now the Army Museum, but the contractor reportedly gave up in frustration because it wouldn't fall from hits with the wrecking ball.
Just wanted to give a little bit of history and say thanks for your efforts

I couldn't memorize more details, but can easily find out more if necessary
