anybody catch the new serries on discovery channel.
they basicly put urban legends to the test, to see if it's possable.

in the episode I watched the tested the RATO chevy myth.  (chevy has a RATO attached and reaches close to 200 mph before leaving the ground and hitting a wall)

they didn't have the RATO's so they used 3 engines from model rockets (big ones 3-4" in dia., fired in stages to reproduce the HP and duration of the RATO) wired the car up for remote and took it to the salt flats.

the car was doing 80 when they fired the rockets.  it walked away from the chopper (where, they where filming from and running the remote) that they said was doing 130mph.  not sure why they didn't bring along a radar gun, and they already knew from checking with the state troopers that it was a myth. but it was fun to watch.

after a secessfull run by remote I'd of had to reload and try it from the drivers seat,  but they didn't.

IAW... a TV version of Snopes...

I wonder what 20 year-old wunderkind pitched this one to the network execs for a whopping six figures...

WRT the rocket car, I've always liked this particular version... http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/8.08/rocketcar.html

I was just thinking about where that show had gone. I caught a few episodes last year (including the RATO, sounds like they're re-airing what they have), was pretty cool.  The pop-rocks with soda episode was definately one to remember :D

I saw that episode. Worth watching alright.

I also saw one some time ago, regarding the Blonde woman and the exploding Pillsbury Muffin Mix.

That was a good one too.

I really loved a show called "Penn and Teller's Bull*****"

That was entertaining, as they tore into all the BS they can find from Bottled water, to Tree huggers, to Psychics.

The best was when they set up a fake restaurant, and charged people $10 and up for bottled waters from around the world. Of course, they were fancy labels filled from the hose behind the restaurant. You should have seen these yuppies...

"Oh this one tastes like Glacier water!"

"Oh this one is much crisper!"

actually it walked away from the helo that had a top speed of 130.  from a very amiture guess I'd go with about 175-80 when compared to the helo's speed.  I really wish they'd brought a radar gun along.
