The Press screw up another one?
« on: September 29, 2003, 11:57:45 AM »
What helo is this....

In the Khaldiyah firefight, American M1A2 tanks fired 120-mm cannons as helicopters strafed farm houses with 50-mm machine gun fire. Two A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft bombed guerrilla positions while F-15 jets streaked across the sky.

A 50-mm Machine Gun?

I thought the biggest Helo mounted cannon was on the Apache at 30-mm.

Besides the fact that you are nitpicking on a simple typo - (the idiotic american system of using metric and standard systems in the same application combined with poor schooling strongly contribute to confusion), who are you criticizing?
"The Press" is not that specific, even if one does not include Internet sources. Usially a link or at least a reference is presented, not that I care.

During afghanistan, airheaded reporter women interveiwing some expert guy. "So the B-52s are bombing here" he points at map. "those are the bombers that bombed germany during the 2nd ww?" She asks. blink blink blink as he numbly stares back at her. "Ummm, no these come from a little later. "

Wow, where did you pull that one from?

Geez, it was a simple question about armament.

Relax, hot rod.

So I take it, there is no Helo being fielded with a 50-mm Cannon?

Can I get a straight answer, not laced with insults and a political agenda?

Calm down,  muckmaw.

It does not matter whether they are correct or not. It's just that when you say "they screwed up", you should at least tell us who you meant. Especially if you use so wide a category as "The press". I am quite happy with the press I read which may be different from the one you use.
I bet if Boroda posted that same message with a heading "The Americans screwed up", you would have requested some explanations.

You may rest assured that there are no 50-mm mashineguns on US helicopters. There are 50-cal machineguns, which is the same as 12.5mm.
It was an Associated Press release written by a guy named Tareq Al-Issawi. One would think that guys with arabic names would be able to keep their calibers straight...

Anyway, what the heck those" F-15 jets" were doing "streaking across the sky" while everyone - tanks, A-10s and helicopters - were busy destroying the farmhouses.
Why were they slacking? Couldn't they drop a cluster-bomb or something? :)

That makes sense. It's the simple mistake of changing the 50 Cal with 50 MM. Simple enough. I thought it sounded weird, but not knowing much about armament, I thought I should ask.

Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

One Time I saw on CNN I heard this:

"(Forget most of it) They are planning to bomb something (forgot) with a massive, 100 lb bunker buster bomb.

That's some bomb.  It almost weighs as much as I do!
