USA and the highs altitudes
« on: October 02, 2003, 08:59:13 AM »
for my impression the p-38 is very stable at high altitude better than all other usa figther that we have in AH, but someone, after had read an article, make me have some doubts about that  so....making an example

i'm about 28k altitude... without bombs, rockets, or DTs ...
just figther configuration
it could be for an High CAP or Escort
... in that case
what is the more stabile USA's platform
beetwin  p-51s,  p-47s, p-38 ?

i exclude F4Us series like F6F, p-40 and so long becouse i think
the choice fall beetwin ponys jugs and ligthing, but like i have sayd i got some doubts about....
tya for helping to break my uncertainty

The P-38 gets better as you go higher.  At 20,000 feet and up, it seems to perform as good as (or better than) the Mustang.  As you said, it is very stable but you must remember to use your rudders to help your rolls and turns. You must also be careful to watch your speed and remember to use your combat flaps to provide more lift for the wings.

The P-51B climbs a little faster than the P-51D, and turns a little bit better than the P-51D at all altitudes, high and low.  But, the P-51B compresses easier than the P-51D, has a worse blind spot behind you, and has fewer machine guns .

For me, the P-51B and P-51D seem to stall worse than the P-38 at high altitude.  When a Mustang stalls a wing, it is very difficult to recover.

I don't know much about the P-47, other than the P-47-D30 is the better one of the three P-47 choices.

Also, for the Corsairs at high altitude, I prefer the F4U birdcage rather than the F4U-1D.  The F4U will hold more gas, so you can spend more time climbing up without worrying about running out of gas.  The F4U birdcage Corsair is also a little faster at high altitude than the F4U-1D.

Jug will out maneuver p38 and p51 above 20k IMO.  As far as perfomance past 25k i know p47 is superior to pony in terms of speed and climb.  Not sure about p38 though... P38 will be slower than jug up there but i don't know about climb.

When you fly above 20,000ft in the P-38L be careful about getting into compressability.  The speed that you enter compressability gets lower as you get altitude.  Make sure that you don't use combat flaps and keep the elevator trim set to approximate neutral (on the _ part of the L of the ELV on the trim indicator).  This way when you engage the dive flaps when you dive it will pitch the nose up.  If the plane isn't trimmed to neutral or you have combat trim on the dive flaps don't work all that well.
