India's tech boom: Our "Service" transformation

Not far from me is a firm called EnvisionNet, where they are the Customer Service for Dell.  Calls after 8PM EST go to India.

Best friend works there, for $7 something an hour.  Listens to people complain about their orders and such...sounds like it has its moments of fun and "do I HAVE to pick up this call?"...

He mentioned a lot of customers are complaining about the foreign help to them.  Not sure if anyone heeds it, or if there are enough complaints to warrant them reconsidering having USA Helpdesk operators...

Meanwhile, Rip and I will be happy to SuperSize your Big Mac for 59 cents!  Please drive up to the next window!

And IMO "IT" is more a "service" than a product.  Perhaps the next chapter in the book on the evolution of the US economy and industry is how the US manages to export it's service industry too after having succesfully ditched it's manufacturing capacity.
What will the unemployed factory workers turned layed off telemarketers do next?

we outpriced ourselves - why pay a US programmer $75k when you can pay an overseas counterpart < $20K

the average machine is fast enough today not even to have to worry if one product is alittle more bloated than the other ..

Somewhere in the world..... A kid is working his hitech gaming computer, running a cad program, crunching the numbers, looking for the solution, and he invents a contact lense computer with a on/off heads-up display which is controlled by the eyelid.  The kid is famous, and is a billion dollar man overnight.  Suddenly Dell, HP, Apple, and Compaq are the Edsel, and left out in the cold.  That's the way it works ladies and gentlemen.    :)
