Our Il-2 underarmoured?
« on: October 04, 2003, 12:58:03 PM »
Playing Il2 on my new system this week alot I noticed the dang things won't go down.  I put on average 2-3 30mm into them and they continue merrily along. This is from the upper rear hitting the wings and tail between gunner and vert. stab. They shrug 20mm off just fine as well mostly. They go down eventually but it takes awhile.

In FB can they shoot you through their tail too? I mean through the whole thing including fuselage. Im direct 6 200 meters back and way low. and its png, ping ping.

Hi Pooh,

>I put on average 2-3 30mm into them and they continue merrily along. This is from the upper rear hitting the wings and tail between gunner and vert. stab.

The Il-2's wings weren't armoured at all, and of wooden construction outboard of the landing gear for most models. Accordingly, against 30 mm mine shells the wings were of below-average durability.

I have np dropping il2s with 30mm especially after the last patch.

Their defensive guns are easy enough to avoid, their control cables are easily damaged.

Are playing FB with the current patch or the original IL2?

With 20mm you need to aim for the oil cooler underneath the cockpit. 2 or 3 hits and it will smoke and burn.

I'll make a track if you like.

ok my track wont play for you then. I only have fb installed, I have the originally around here some where but I dont feel like installing it.

There was some dm issues in the original but I dont recall the il2s being all that tough.

In the current version of FB 1 3cm hit =

The left wing falls away right after this single hit

As you can see the tail flies away. I hit this il2 2 times. 1 time (see hole in left wing) the 30 mm punched through the wing and detonated so it just left a whole. The second hit blew away the tail section.

I was flying an early g6. 3cm hub, no gondolas.

Fire at the wings tips Pooh even with Mg151/20s from the 109G2 they come down quickly especially if you come in from a dive.

In the real war, Luftwaffe pilots were taught to shoot at the oil cooler sticking out of the lower right of the fuselage.  Otherwise, it wasn't unusual for earlier 109 versions to expend whole ammo loads on a single IL-2 without result.

Aircraft 'armor' seems to be not modeled at all.  Some of the il2's parts(notably the engine) have more 'hitpoints' than average though.

Against flakpanzers though, it doesnt matter, since if you get hit you're dead.

It's how the damage is portrayed in the game, that makes our IL-2 or P-47s seem weeker than their reputation. Let's hope the structural DM in the upcoming AH2 is a bit different from what we have now.

I have found that the Stormovik will sometimes survive 37mm Flak hits.  I have had my IL-2 hit by Ostwinds and although I lost a wing tip or elevator or flap, I was able to nurse it home.

I don't know of any other single-engine aircraft that will survive a single hit from a Flak Panzer.

Even the the P-47 feels weak in AH, I have sustained a hit from an ostwind and survived in it.  It just lost the wingtip.  However it seemed as if there was a blast effect as when I was hit I got thrown into a hard roll for a complete turn before I was able to regain control.

I managed to kill Il2s in Il2 quite easily by getting in close and giving them a burst from all weapons in my G6. I don't know if it had the 30mm or the 20mm central, but it had gunpods as well.
One Il2, I saw his wingtip busted and then it must've exploded cause I got the kill message right away.
