Squad Nose Art.....attn: NATE, SUPERFLY...
« on: May 16, 2001, 11:15:00 AM »
ok...

1. is it possible to have a nose art file that is 128w x 64h ? would it be easy to implement? will it work if i just do it without have it be programmed in by HT?

2. how many of you guys out there would like to have a wider area for art? in order to get names and squad text to fit rather than trying to cram it in a square?

i think it's just a proportion thing, but i just wanted others opinions?

thanks...

-mas

No, they have to stay with the specific requirements.  Sorry!

why mr. superfly, why? <7yr old whiney mode>

seriously, <dweeb/putz mode> what is it that makes the 64x64 rule? is it the fact that it has to be square, or does it have to do with the number of pixels/data?  i'm curious on a development front as well as a techno putz "how does this thing work" mode.

Bandwidth bandwidth bandwidth.

They are limited as they are because to make them any larger would suck up a LOT more bandwidth when you connect.  When you connect, your FE must dowload any nose art you don't already have.  If you aren't very very careful with that, when joe newby connects to the MA for the first time he's gonna have to sit there for 15 minutes downloading the nose art.  That wouldn't be good for business.  In fact the even greater concern would be the extra server bandwidth requirements that could very well affect everybody playing on the server if there isn't enough bandwidth to cover those downloads.  Bandwidth is a HUGE cost to a business like HTC, so that has got to be a big concern.  Hence the limitations.

I still would like them to be Bigger on the aircraft.

Like the P51 is neat, u can see it good, but on the P47 it's as tiny as on a LW FW

Same on the B17, it's all little but huge (and it's good) on a B26. Afterall, those nose arts are the "proud" of the squadron who show them in formation flying/ rwy take off.

Why not display them better?

Nose art is a great idea...to bad its not worth much right now as implimented.

Its on the nose (well yeah), which means the NME will not see it 99.99% of the time even if they are REAL CLOSE.  Also its not carried over into films (BIG ISSUE for me).  I mean, wouldnt it be nice to be able to see the squad markings in the screenshots from films?

I realize that custome skins is impractical in many ways, but having the squad artwork be placed over the current roundels and such would make quite an impact!  Oh how I wish.

If we went to a larger size for the squad art, it would go up to 128x128, thus doubling download time.  But the main reason is to keep with our video card minimum requirements for the game.

Ya know what, I think it not showing in the films is the only thing that bothers me too.  It doesn't sound like much... but that's when we REALLY want to see the nose art.

Superfly, I'm sorry I'm not very good at technical stuff.

Would "importing bigger nose arts" would slow the video card, or is it "displaying a bigger nose art" who would slow the video card?

(cause I'm talking about displaying them bigger, but still using the ones we already have).

Hey Frenchy!

I think its not because of slowing some videocard. Its proly mainly because all the noseart, just as all textures should be stored in the Vidcard-memory. If there are manymany big nosearts to be stored, a 16MB vidcard wouldnt be enuough anymore and everytime a not-stored-noseart should be displayed it would have to be transferred into vid-mem. Over a PCI-Bus possibly and that woulfd hit the framerates just like the smoke.
In a dogfight very close to the nme not the best thing to happen. So min. requirements would rise.
BTW, if u rise the size from 64x64 to 128x128 u do not doubler the mem-amount but take it times 4. Not compressed that is

Hope this helps...
