why do you choose to fly the planes you fly?
« on: May 16, 2001, 02:04:00 PM »
(warning creamo! random pointless survey seeking useless information)

most people have their prefered planes which they enjoy most yet for each person this set of planes or single aircraft is different.

the reasons for flying certain planes are equally varied from challenge, looks, performance, etc.

what are your planes and why do you choose to fly them?
Fester was my in game name until September 2013

I like British and Japanese aircraft.

Looking over my stats though, I fly a pretty good mix of aircraft, nobody gets left out.

Basically I just grab whatever a feel like at a given moment.

P-47

It's big and sexy.
It's got 8 x .50 Cals as a guns set, my favourite.
It suites my flying style.
It is very challenging to fly in AH compared with the late war planeset we have here.
It's not common.  I like flying something different.

Spit IX with 50's

Handles well at High and low Alts, not bad as an attack fighter, and one of the better choices of a fighter from the selection we have IMO. Just have to be sure of your shots before you take them because of the small ammo load.

I think strategically first, then fly the aircraft that the job calls for.  When in "Fun" mode, I load one of 35 variety missions for the troops, ranging from  "Japanese Jabo" missions to "British Bullocks" missions...."Boys...just wanna have fun."

I usually fly the DHog.  I like her because she's blue and beautiful!  Just gotta love those gull wings!  She's got a good mix of armament, speed and manueverability (did I spell that right?)

Ok ok ok...  So my favorite show when I was a kid was The Black Sheep Squadron!  So I went to bed every night as a kid staring up at models of a F4U shooting down a Zero. The Zero was suspended from the ceiling by it's tail, with cotton balls up the wire for smoke.  I was just brought up liking the Corsair!

In AW:
(fighter) F4U was a real challenge to fly and I had always liked the plane
(dive bomber) VAL was a great platform and able to fight well after a drop
(torpedo) KATE was a very tough bird in AW
(bomber - Axis) JU88 could outrun most interceptors in a dive and capable of holding it's own when cornered...great for killing Westy
(bomber -Allied) B-17 for hvy raids, Invader for ground support

Worst experiences in AW were in the Betty (they all died) and the Jug (compressed on me when I just looked out the canopy).

In AH (granted, this is only my second tour):
(fighter) F4U-D feels very much like the AW Hog and suits my flying style.

I like the feel of the Jug in AH, but I will have to work more on E-management to use it effectively.

I would like to get some time in with the JU88 again (just to kill Westy with).

Nifty, you NEED to join our squad.    SOunds like our childhoods were similiar (except Blacksheep wasn't on TV in the 60's)

I like to fly 'em all at some time or another.

Jugs are about my favorite 'fun' ride, although I often don't have much more success with its 8 guns than I do with the 202, which is my favorite 'turny' ride.  Tiffies are about my favorite if I really want to kill something, it's guns are great, and it's fast enough to press an attack.  Strangely, I haven't found myself using 190s very often, I'm gonna have to start flying them for that very reason.

I like 109G2s and F4u-1ds just for the yellow noses (even though the F4 *is* blue), and I wish we had a yellow nosed Jug, too.

The plane I'd most like to be flying is the P-40.

If there's a scenario, or I'm reading a good book about a particular aircraft or area of the war, then that'll almost certainly decide what I fly most of the time.

I've already applied to the 332nd Flying Mongrels!  Thanks for the offer though!

looks like they're already defending their fresh meat!

On an interesting side note in this.  A guy I worked with for my Design Project was a backseater in an F/A 18 with the VFMA-332 Moonlighters.  He's now an RIO instructor at NAS Pensacola, though he's getting out in a week or so to go civilian!  He got a real kick out of the squadrons emulating historical Marine squads.   Just thought I'd share that with you!  Hmm, wonder what he's gonna think when I tell him I'm joining the 332nd??? (even though the Mongrels aren't based after the Moonlighters)

I try to vary the aircraft I fly regularly.  I have favorites, Jug, Pony, Dora, and Franz, but I always do my best not to get too focused.  This is mainly due to my RL job (Military)...I never know when I might be offline for very extended periods of time, and I would like to "get to know them all".  Eventually I'll have some stability lol, then I'll focus.
