Davis and Vietnam?
« on: October 07, 2003, 07:04:44 PM »
Ok Davis the soon I hope to be X governer of California claims to be a Vietnam vet.

He said this recently "I have had real bullets fired at me, nothing in this recall scares me" Or something close.

I tried doing a google search to find out if he was in Vietnam, and if he was what he did? Anyone know a place to find out if he really was shot at?

Davis served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969, returning home as a captain with a Bronze Star for meritorious service.

"I was in the combat arms, the Signal Corps," Davis said in the Larry King interview. "But my primary job was to make sure the tactical radios, we called them SGRs, worked."

Signal Corps is NOT combat arms.  Not now and not then.

Signal Corps is combat support. They do get shot at occasionally (ex. laying wire in a still contested area) but contact with the enemy is not their function like the real Combat Arms.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Isn't the Bronze star one that can be awarded for good service and not combat? Is that what "meritorious service"?

LoL is that like spending a whole year in another nation and not getting the clap?

If it's awarded for actions performed in combat it usually comes with a 'combat V for Valor'. However, just because his was for meritorious achievement (as opposed to "carrying a 'V'") does not mean he was never shot at.

Signals guys got shot at in SE Asia all the time. Not as much as a guy in an infantry unit, but they still got shot at. Think about it - they are the commo link guys for conventional units fighting an enemy using unconventional/'guerilla'/'ambush-first' tactics.

And never forget that it's guranteed that for every medal awarded there's a guy that should have been awarded 2 but no one saw what he did or whoever did see him managed to get killed before filing the paperwork.

A guy can be a brave and competent soldier and still be an prettythanghole as a person and/or a less-than-capable politician. Look at John Glenn - a great astronaut who did some pretty lame things as a politician.

Not to discredit ANY Vietnam Veterans, but according to (Ret) Col. David Hackworth, REMFS were passing out medals like crazy in Vietnam.  Col. Hackworth says that someone even awarded him a medal while he was on leave in the U.S. from Vietnam.

Ironically, David Hackworth is the most decorated (living) U.S. soldier.

My brother only got a flag draped coffin and a Purple Heart.
Word came on Feb. 13, 1968. It’s a day that changed our family forever.

I feel it disrespectful to make fun of anyone who earned any recognition in service of our country. Playing politics with those who serviced in the military is sleazy!

Amen to that Ozark.

I may hate Gumby's (local radio guys call him that cause of his hair) politics but I salute his service.

and to your brother too.

He is not forgotten!!!  And I can't agree with you more.  I looked up to my friend Harry Cash who served with the Jolly Greens in Vietnam he was and still is my hero and a true friend to this day.

The October 10th 2002 LA Times has a pretty detailed account of his service in Vietnam, and the effect it had on his life.

I never cared for Grey Davis, and when given the opportunity I never voted for him. But I really don't see how anyone could make an issue out of this.

Why is it that some of the self proclaimed patriots get all up in arms with anything negative said about military yet feel compelled to belittle the military service of those with wrong party association ? Especially our local "patriots" who never served themselves ?

OK there people.

I am  not trying to take anything away from his service to his country. I am simply curious what he did in that war.... Jeez some of you need to chill the hell out. Asking what he did is not attacking him, there is more then enough ammo out there to not like him from his Political life.

Gray is the one who brought it up in a speech I just wanted to know if it was more of his political BS.

I thing Gray is a tool, but I can respect that he served. It does  not make him any more or less of a tool to me.

Ozark, I am sorry about your brother.

Do you have a link tot he LA times story?
