Bear Mauling Kills Grizzly Advocate

This guy and his friend were deep in the Alaskan wilderness.  A float plane dropped them off.  When the pilot returned to pick them up, he observed a bear eating a body.  When investigators came to see what happened, they were attacked by 2 bears.  Took 13 12-gauge shotgun rounds to kill 1 bear.

And once again Mother Nature takes a bear-sized bite out of the Walt Disney-esqe attitude people have.  It sounds like this guy had experience around bears.  That's why they're called wild animals, because they tend to do the unexpected.  This guy pushed the averages and paid for it.

" According to the group's Web site, Treadwell's practice was to travel to bear country without weapons. "

Isn't that like swimming with great whites?

And what would you do to a bear if it attacked you while you were holding a shotgun?  Hug it?

In reality they killed a Bear for doing what a bear does.
Kind of like killing a fish for swimming or a bird for flying dont ya think?
I mean come on people the poor dam things barely ahve any habitat left any more thank to mans developing of the lands.
You cant blame a dumb animal for doing what he is programed to do.

Yeah, I'm in favor of giving bears some space to do what they do.
I'm not in favor of treating them like they're not bears.

By that logic, I will never go outside again for fear that a mosquito will have to pay the ultimate price when it bites me.

This thread reminded me of the a#1 stupidest thing I've ever seen.

I worked in West Yellowstone a couple of summers when I was in college.  I was in the park gearing up to fish when I hear a shouting match nearby.  I look over, and there is a father holding his 2 or 3 year old son up in the air and approaching a group of buffalo.  The shouting was between him and the mother, who was standing a short distance away.  Dad intended to put the kid on the back of one of those tame buffalos and take a picture.  Mom didn't think this was a good idea.

He tried to approach the buffalo a couple of times, and luckily they just moved away.  He finally gave up after people other than his wife started shouting at him.

I remember being in Yellowstone when a buffalo walked up to my family's minivan.  I had seen them at a distance earlier in the day, but you really don't appreciate their size until they're right there.  That thing could have knocked the darn van over if he'd wanted.

They're big.  Anyone who would not feel at least a bit threatened around them is a moron.

Start a pool:  How long until someone is trying to sell this tape?

Alaska Bear Mauling Recorded on Tape
Wed Oct 8,11:55 PM ET

By RACHEL D'ORO, Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The graphic sounds of a deadly bear attack in the Alaska wilderness were captured on tape, revealing a wildlife author's final, frantic screams as he tried to fend off the beast, authorities said Wednesday.

Trooper Chris Hill said the tape suggests a video camera was turned on just before Timothy Treadwell was attacked at his campsite. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was later mauled to death by a bear. The recording is audio only, and the screen is blank for all six minutes.

"They're both screaming, she's telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear," Hill said. "There's so much noise going on. I don't know what's him and what might be an animal.

"It's pretty disturbing. I keep hearing it in my mind."
.......
Hill said he was stunned by what he heard on the tape.

"The audio starts while he's being mauled and ends while he's being mauled," Hill said.

Treadwell may have heard a bear and asked Huguenard to turn on the camera, which was found with the lens cap on and packed in a camera bag, Hill said.

"At first, she sounds kind of surprised and asks if it's still out there. I'm not sure if she was asking if a bear was outside their tent or in the brush," Hill said. "The audio stops because the tape runs out. Otherwise, it probably would have captured the whole thing."

Hill said he will attempt to transcribe the tape. But there are no plans to make the recording or transcripts public, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said.

Troopers recovered video and still photography equipment as well as three hours of earlier video footage from the site, across Shelikof Strait from Kodiak Island.
