Its also a systems hog on the server.  Also you'll land fewer kills because people around you will keep shooting at it till it blows or hits ground.

if i recall correctly in WB a pk'ed plane's icon used to turn white, the kill was being awarded, and the white iconed wreck kept fallin'. no one was able to score a hit on it, even if pumping all ammo - server just did not count the hits. and the pk'ed pilot was immidiattely back in tower. his last plane had a "drone" status or smthng. so i guess it could be done, and it sure would be nice to have it.

Kinda.  WB3's icons turn grey when it determines that the aircraft has been destroyed.

The problem is I've seen aircraft that were still dangerous, or at least still flyable (glideable), labeled as destroyed.

Seems simple ... and somewhat devious. Plane turning white or grey? Nehhhh .... the server knows if that pilot is dead or not. The server knows who killed the pilot. Surely it can be coded to award the kill and let the plane spiral out of control. Then the 6 or 7 pilots despirate to grab the kill before it hits the ground have to ask themselves ... am I wasting ammo? Do I follow just to see if it pulls out or hits? If I squirt it and don't get the kill, how do I phrase my whine? :D

Of course .... I agree that anything that really causes an excessive server load is bad. But I don't buy it doing that. It's like saying flying too many planes overloads the server .. period. If that's the case, limit the arena population. Take a number. ;)

I wouldn't know 'cuz I never get killed ( :D  ), but I hear it's kinda fun to sit in the cockpit of a spinning plane on its way to the ground.

I like the idea of having the plane spiral down instead of explode once the pilot dies.  For one, all these exploding planes is a bit stupid.   Planes never exploded so much, but aside from that, like Arlo said, it adds an aspect to the fight.  When a plane goes down like that, is the pilot dead or is he just playing dead?  Do you follow?  I think it would be great.

server load?
« Reply #11 on: October 13, 2003, 12:24:12 PM »
What exactly will load the server?
Most everyone's computers will be able to handle the extra wreck and smoke on the ground, say for 5-10 minutes. After that, let em dissapear. If the pilots gone from that plane, not much more from the server is required to code one point on the ground, or for that matter, an arc or spiral (which can be preset).

If the player is dead, dont let him back in a plane until the wreck hits the ground ( or 30 sec. max) and let the server plot the wreckage on the map - where our CPU will render the image, wreck, smoke, looters, etc.

As far as bailing out, it should take on average a lot longer to pop the canopy and jump - it's too unrealistic the way it is now.
I think IL-2 has a good one to pattern by for both wrecks and bailing out.
