Great pilot just died
« on: May 18, 2001, 01:01:00 PM »
Alexey Petrovich Maresyev, the Soviet fighter pilot who lost his legs and still flew, scoring 16 personal victories.... 11 of them w/o both legs.

he died 2 days before he was 85 :-(
today... In the Soviet Army theatre, 2 hours before his celebration party....

He was a Real Man... One of the last...

ohh damn this is very sad   His name was probably more known in Russia then that of Kozhedub and Pokryshkin.

btw, Meresyev flew in 63 GFAR (guards fighter air regiment), unit that was tasked with army evaluation of La-7. From the end of August 1944 to October of that year, unit gained 55 confirmed victories, for the loss of only 4 aircraft.

No he didn't fight for it. He fought for survival of his people, just like any Slav or a Jew did in WWII. Even aristocrats of the Czarist Russian Empire who weren't really happy with Stalin's regime or true communists who were exterminated by the same Stalin understood that that war was not about the regime and helped the Soviet Army with whatever they could (including sizeable donations).

So do not besmirch the memory.
