Please do! Be convincing though, shallow cast, slow jig, no stinky bait, use good rhythm... these guys are easy to get worked up!

For the last three years I've owned both, a 2001 E320 (50,000 km) and a 2001 530i (85,000 km) with the full sports package.  Reliable article source or not, I would have to agree with the general conclusions.  For me, the E320 class overall is a much more enjoyable vehicle to drive, particularly on long trips.  I also find the esthetics, GPS system, assorted gadgets (ie: E320 PSC sonar and cruise radar system), as well as general ride comfort to be better, but the latter is more then likely due to the harder handling of the sports suspension, tires and steering (DSC) set-up of the 530i.  So, perhaps that's not a fair comparison.

Perhaps the on set of old age is overtaking my need for the testosterone rush.... :D

In any event, after test driving for a week the new 5 Series, I've just ordered the 2004 E320 with all of the toys to replace the 2001 530i.  There might be days I'll miss the sports handling, but I think they won't be many.

Badger

I've not driven the E320 or any Merc for that matter, but from what I've been told of owners of both is the BMW's handling is superior, but the Mercs are king of the "Cruising" road.

Wifes ording a 2005 5-series, we're doing a Euro delivery.  She loved the 530i she test drove earlier this spring.  Hope they fix the trunk lines! :p

Luck on your new purchase! I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy it.  They're out of our price range for what we're willing to pay for transportation, unfortunately.

That's actually very true..... :)

My 530i handled like a sports car compared to the E320, which had that old guy "cruising" (picture fedora, cigar and Cadillac) kind of feel.  Now you understand my feeling old comment. ;)  I never tried the AMG 55 Merc, which I've heard is a better comparison to the 530i with sports package.

If I was 40 years younger and had that 530i for school and "dolly" cruising.... wow!  Unfortunately, I had a 1958 Sunbeam... :D

Good luck with the new 5 SERIES purchase...

Badger
