Kweassa's AH2Beta Firstlook Review(with luscious pics)
« on: October 15, 2003, 08:52:16 PM »
Hi there, I'm Kweassa.

I'm a semi-strat-potato semi-veteran started off from AH1.05, and I must say the AH2 beta looks very promising. It may not look much, if you expected something matching IL-2/FB levels of graphical delight, but the closer you look at it, you really begin to notice that the level of detail AH2 offers, makes sense.

Now, that may sound like an apologetic excuse in part of HTC, but it really isn't so. One thing particularly delighted me, was while dynamic lighting effects seems to be very limited when compared to FB, the overall "tone" of the color was very cleverly implanted. If any one of you ever saw my opinions in Screenshots forums, relating to how much the lightings and 'tones' of the colors attributes to a 'realistic feel', you would understand.

Despite the level of graphical detail, the overall 'pastel tone' takes a lot away from FB in realistic essence(while admittably, it's still incredibly good overall) - making the game look like a very well drawn Aviation art.

However, AH2 cleverly disguises the lack of graphical goodies that becomes a burden to people with low-end systems with better texture resolutions, and a deeper color tone which in my personal opinion, arouses the illusion of realistic environment, way better than the 'pastel tone' of FB. When you see a P-51D, or a P-51B flying around in AH2 terrain, there's this feel you can't quite describe, which makes you smile :) .

 ..

So enough about pep-talk. Let's get down to business.

I'll bet a lot of you who didn't get a chance to d/l AH2 Beta yet, wants to see some good pics.

Some metaphysical guy way before our time said "God is in the details", and it seems he was right. While in truth it is nothing more than a mere refinement of what was before, the new control tower actually offers a good amount of immerssiveness by just sitting in it. In AH, the tower was nothing but a dull, bland place you briefly go after you die. It didn't offer much of anything. While looking at planes roll from their runways, or seeing enemy vulchers larry around in hot CAP, was quite fun, normally, the tower wasn't anything impressive at all.

Not anymore. The tower is now located at a small hill in the middle of the base, which is the highest ground actually inside the base. It offers a good clear view of the immensely larger air field. Looking around the field in the tower is actually a lot of fun. The hangars, shacks, dumps, small things attribute to a lot of good feel, and one almost feels like grabbing the microphone and saying a few words. Oh, and that cup o' java's a nice touch.

The feeling you get inside the tower isn't surprising. Just compare to the fields you have seen in AH with this - the panoramic view of the field, is just awesome:

The detail put into the new field layout is very encouraging. Not only is it bigger, but the layouts and objects are historical and convincing. You've got the hangars, radar towers, water storage towers, ammo dumps.. rearm pads with supplies nearby, carefully planned out taxi ways, and plenty more objects which are carefully placed. If you think the field overview picture above is cool, just try taking off in one. Do a circle around the field and observe, and it almost feels like the mechanics or pilots at ground will pop out from some building and wave at you! :)

Simular level of effort was put into the surrounding 'sites'. Here's a pic of one of the factories; if you remember what the old ones looked like - the matchboxes cluttered around a dusty, yellow wasteland.. - then you're gonna love how much more fun bombing will become, with these factories:

Planes and Vehicles

Everybody was very interested in what new planes AH2 might feature. Unfortunately(and as foretold by the developers themselves), AH2 offers no new planes, and the plane set in this new release beta version, is one that almost mirrors the former beta - it offers only a handful of planes as a 'sample'.

But don't be discouraged - the new looks of these planes, is enough to make you expect with enthusiasm, what the finished, On-line version will be like. For example, take the Bf109G-10.

The Bf109G-10 in AH, is one of the oldest planes in the plane set, dating back to when planes used something like octagonal wheels. It didn't even have the machine guns modelled - a dark blotch on the texture was all that marked where the sleek MG131 13mm machine guns were placed.

Well, just follow me in this walk-around the G-10, and any Bf109 fan will be thrilled.

The front quarter view of the new G-10. Notice the detail put into the exhausts, supercharger intake, oil-cooler intake. The textures are also much more detailed. Another 'old-gripe' was the unsatisfactory modelling of the cowling "bulges" - well, that's no more.

Might this be an appeasement, for the frustrations of the avid Axis plane fans? Who knows? But the detail put into depicting this mighty 109, is sometimes jaw-dropping. Not even FB modelled something like this - just look at those beautiful mounts on the Revi-16B!

One good advantage AH has over FB, is that AH attempts to model the external 3D of the plane, and the cockpit, as one. Instead of using a separately modelled cockpit, AH uses a cockpit that is directly inside the 3D model of the plane - which is a good thing, as you can see:

The frame and glass of the cockpit is enough to make you smile. The rivets and panels on the sides of the plane, is also a vast improvement from the former AH 256x256 textures. The slender silhouette of this mighty Luftwaffe bird, against the background of the field, seems to foretell something good is coming. The number "21" belongs to the pilot Franz Wienhusen. It has never looked so clear and sleek before.

 ...

Now, does it look as great inside the hangar?

Unfortunately not. The hangar does look flimsy.. but for now, that is. I'm not sure if the 'cleaned up' version of the current hangar screen will be used, or a new layout might be up. The hangars are so big, up to 'historical' sizes, and yet, one plane sitting in the middle of it, with a few loosely scattered objects, kind of 'slips' the concentration from the screen. There's definately room for some improvement here.

 ...

If the Bf109G-10 is one of the most 'changed' plane of them all(feeling actually slower in roll, than before), the popular Spitfire MkIX, is probably the 'least changed'. It's not surprising, as this bird, was one of the most recent subjects to receive a cosmetic make-up. The refined 3D modelling doesn't show as clearly as the Bf109G-10, but still, it's a slender, beautiful plane(and menacing probably, to most of the Spit-haters )

In that aspect, the gooney-bird, C-47A, also seems to not have changed much. But come to think of it, how often does one get a real close look at one?

 ..

But here are another set of birds, which people will be very anxious to see. As said above, the color tone of the new AH2 terrains, have a deep and darker pattern than compared to that of FB - the pastel tones in FB sometimes help recognize the theater you are placed in. The vast and beautiful steppes of Russia. In that case, the tone of AH2 resembles that of a darker natural foliage, one that especially reminds people of Europe.

And in that terrain, which plane is more suited to the eye, than this one?

The P-51B receives less attention than it's younger brother, but as said above, again, seeing this plane fly in AH2 terrain really gives out that 'right' feeling. It feels so right! When I was testing this bird out, I tried a few sessions flying with F4 external chase-view... and what I saw, really impressed me. The strat-whorish immersion-addict roleplayer mentality that I am, I saw a classic '44 fight over the lands of Germany when I saw that 51B whoosh by. Man, I must be seeing things.

 But still, among them all, no plane befits this terrain as this one. No explanations needed - just look at the pic, and enough said;

There's still a couple more planes left.

The Fw190A-5 is one of them. The cockpit of the Butcherbird, seems to be no different from what we have, and it is quite a disappointment for people who expected it better. But remember, this is only the beta! The modernistic, "Benz" or "Chrysler"-ish classy look of the cockpit can't be that far behind, when you look at the amazing changes seen in the Bf109G-10.

The 190's a clean design, with no special protrusion or 'characteristic' forms, so the externals don't look that impressing when compared with the old 190 - but the textures, like in the case of the SpitMkIX, make some good, pleasurely differences to the eye:

Now, the other one, is the Spit MkV... which I don't like much! So you'll only get to see it through it's aiming reticle. But that doesn't mean I haven't got anything to say! It was when I fired through this plane, I really noticed the changes in the tracers. Oh no, I'm not talking about the twisty tracers - I'm talking about what happens to tracers after you shoot.

The pic, unfortunately can't describe even half of what actually happens, but it seems, another feature change, is the tracers are a lot less visible when they leave a certain distance. It looks like a bright patch of small dots, and it really gives you the feeling that a burning white lead is flying through the air. Will this effect the long-range gunnery aspect of AH, even in part? Who knows, we'll just have to find out.

 ...

Another delightful change, is with the M-3 halftrack.

Brings a whole new meaning to the word 'steer', I'd say.

The Panzers and Tigers didn't seem much different, but the new interiors were nice. Then it wasn't until I looked through the gunner's sights, that I noticed a smile running across my face.

Not only do they have a new, cool-er looking aiming reticle, but the new terrain features of AH offer a lot more fun in tank battles. Now that's what I call a 'View to Kill'.

However, I do notice some problems with that - as shown in the picture with the Tiger tank. I recall at some point before, HT himself has shown a lot of interest in the way IL-2 rendered their forests. The method of placing 2~3 layers of textures to produce a 'forest', looks fantastic when looking from the air. No doubt, it feels the same in AH2.

But IL-2/FB never had any tank battles for players to enjoy, and it seems that from a tanker's perspective, the forest lines look like circles hovering in thin air. This should be addressed in some way.. maybe placing a vertical layer of 'forest' texture around the horizontal layers might do..?

 ..

And last, but not the least, the ever-important sun.

The sun is very well done, but I couldn't help but notice in my trial flights, that the icons remain every bit as visible whether the sun is blinding me or not. I'm sure the sun wasn't put there just to hurt your eyes - will the icons be rendered invisible, or very hard to see, with the finished version? Let's hope so.

 ..

There are more minor changes overall. For one thing, the new FM seems that it'll need some time to get used to - I never thought I'd ever see the day I'd crash a 109 in take-off in AH.. well, I did that in AH2. Also, the Spit9 seems to roll slower, and the Fw190A-5 seems to roll faster.

The 'hit sprites', unfortunately, remain unchanged, but it seems that it got smaller overall, or at least, the range where the hit sprites are displayed larger, seems to have decreased. As this is just the beta, we might be able to see better hit sprites in the finished version.

Ofcourse, some of the features, are quite doubtful. In my case, I felt really uncomfortable with the 'twisty' smoke trail the tracers are leaving. At first I thought all I needed was some time to get used to it.. but no matter how I toyed with the new beta, I couldn't feel any more comfortable.

Personally, I was hoping for a generally more 'smoky' and 'faint' version of the current AH tracer - where it looks like a straight, grey laser beam. If it looked more faint and sparse, like how smoke should be, that would have been enough. I think HTC went a little too far, and now, I'm sorry to say it looks like planes spewing spaghetti noodels - especially the planes armed with multiple MGs such as the P-51D - man, it looks terrible!

My suggestion for the tracer is, leave the 'twisty' tracer for the cannons only (if that is possible) , and if possible, make it a bit more voluptous - it looks too thin. When a thick trail has a faint essence of a spiral - as you can see in FB - that looks nice. But if you have a grey thin line going in spirals, it does look like a noodle!

So, make it thicker, and reserve it to 20mm~40mm cannons... and let machine guns have a different type of tracer smoke! That be my suggestion for today.

 ...

Overall, it certainly isn't what we expected. Some of us may had our hopes up a little too high, some of us may have not expected anything special at all. But AH2 beta, is a taste of what to come, and there are a lot more things to be carefully seen, to figure out.

It's admittably a little 'weak' for a 'beta' build. A little too good for an alpha build, too :) . At a scale of 1 to 10, I give AH2 Beta 8.5

My review (no pics)

1. terrain-

outstanding, its a cross between EAW meets il2. Flying low I wanna strafe the buildings (farms) and watch the little guys run out. The stacked trees are just like il2. They could use a little tweaking to get rid of the squared block edges. This is only visible from underneath though. Flying low level is like in il2  in that aslong as you are paying attention you wont will run into the trees. I beleive this could be fixed by adding more layers near the top to give it some thickness. But its fine how it is. The rolling hills, tree and grass rows look great.

2. planes-

well I was dissappointed witht he 190 cockpit. the g10 is definately an improvement but being a il2/fb fan I was dissapointed. However if this is the price we pay for our head movement its all good.

externally they look 100% better especially the g10. There were a few graphic anomallies with this beta but I am sure they will get worked out.

3. dm-

what dm.

4. fm-

wow what a surprise. I am not an fm geek and only know as much as I read but I think its a real improvement.

5. horizon and sun-

awesome

6. new terrain object and default base layouts-

awesome as well.

7. tracers-

dunno yet. I suffer from some graphic anomalies so I will withhold judgement until these get worked out. Kinda looks like that silly string stuff you get in a can.

7 out of 10 so far

On takeoff, you will definitely notice the engine torque. Plane wants to drop the left wing and push left on the run up. It's almost like you have to use the flaps now to avoid possible roll-over during the inital pull up.

Once airborne and the gear is up, the new flight of the P-51D is about the same at higher speeds, but I couldn't force this new flight model into a spin no matter how hard I tried.

I just about hung the thing on the prop down to 70MPH and the nose just slowly eased back to level.

I tried again and edged it over for a hammer-head, and it just wouldn't fall.

I tried again and got it to flip over on its back (more like a slow roll) and I was able to get instant control again just by centering the controls for about 2 seconds (if that)

I tried an extreme high speed dive and couldn't find a buffet, nor was I able to rip wings even with full stick deflection at 550MPH+

New flight model definitely is going to need some tweaking.

I think the AH1 style cockpits are behinning to look quite worn-out. Huge ammo-counters etc. New cockpits pleazzzzz. The 190 looks horrible, I hope its not final.

The terrain looks awesome.  And the sun! Dang it looks cool!

I got strange texture errors on Spit IX. The side textures appeared also on the right wings underside and the upper side changed its texture all the time. Probably a bug on my HW...

I lost a wing tip while flying the Mustang. Didn't look very convincing. Much like the old AH. A beta feature I hope.

I think it was great that they gave us something to chew while waiting for the new release.

Thx HTC.
