Question abt F4u

 I flew an F4u tonight and came across a lanc. Moved directly to his 6 and took many hits. Shot him down then flew 30 miles to base to land.
 Sounds normal right? Well the lanc took both my wings off leaving me with nothing but rudder and elevator. Landed taxied to the runway.
 Question is: Why is the Corsair able to do this?

Sounds like he took off both of your wingtips (not entire wings).  All aircraft in AH can fly while missing one or both wingtips.

Also noteworthy is that having your wingtips shot off is representative of a large amount of damage sustained to your wings...they can't show bulletholes and such, so when your wings get to a certain damage level, off come the wingtips.

Air, I was a gunner in a Lanc that night where I saw exactly what you described, except the attack started from a high 9 position.  At 500 yds from the upper turret, both wings came off the F4U in their entirety leaving only the wing root/stubs. I continued to see pings hitting the corsair until it passed overhead.  Simply couldn't believe that I was seeing a wingless airplane maneuvering as though it was undamaged.

If there is wingtip damage, I'd expect a visual representation of that.  For HTC: What effect does losing a wingtip have on performance?  Would the outboard aileron hinges be lost?  

Moral of the story:  Shooting one or two wings off does not guarantee a kill.  It may not guarantee that the damaged plane is a neutralized threat.  

Coining a Yogi-ism: A kill aint a kill till its dead.

The visual representation of wingtip damage is that the wing section outboard of the guns will be missing. If the entire wing is destroyed there will be no amount of wing visible at all.
