Low DOS causes planes to disappear

If using less than full "Displayed Object Size", planes will start to miss parts, if observed from a distance.
The more the slider is set to the right, the more parts are missing and the shorter distance you have to move away to see it happen.

I observed the same thing. In fact if you have it in the middle you can get your entire canopy frame to disappear. It would make a nice cheat actually.
