Author Topic: New system, great speed, graphics...horrific PINGS (Read 511 times)

Gents:

Just set up my new box, specs below, tried to get online for some gamery via "All Seeing Eye", my pings are all through the roof. Old system would get 10-15 server choices with 75-100 ping times...on new box everything STARTS at 400+ with tremendous packet loss (50%+) and fluctuation as well.

Normal surfing seems...ok. Email functional. Downloading files seems a bit erratic, sometimes quick, sometimes slow. Any immediate ideas as to what to look at here? Hoping this is something simple I can check....

Do you have an Anti virous/firewall program scanning incoming packets ??? that can slow a connect down alot sometimes.

or a networked system that has packets colliding at the router or switch?

sometimes unpluging the modem and or the router/switch for 30 sec's or so will reset the connect also ...

Is your DSL modem connected to your computer using the USB bus or Ethernet?

Sounds ike you need to have your provider reconfigure for your new system, best thing I ever did was having my modem configured to run on usb ethernet adapter, this allows me to connect to any comp any time wwith no loss of speed.

I would not recommend using the USB port for high speed data connections. The CPU overhead is very, very high when compared to a good Ethernet card, which will substantially increase the likelihood of packet loss.

For some reason I've seen numerous reports both on the net and first hand that people who switch to WinXP home or pro suddenly experience huge network troubles. Minute long search times on lan, packet loss etc.

Any idea on the cause Skuzzy? I've been trying to find a solution as it affects our customers, but no avail.

Siaf, I have heard the same things, but all the installs I have done of XP has not shown this behavior. But all the installs I have done were to new systems.
I wonder is this is an upgrade issue? Wouldn't be the first time MS has had problems with an OS upgrade.

My probs remain. New install of XP Home, connected via ethernet to onboard 3com nic on ASUS p4p800.

Flushed DNS

Tried various mtu and rwin settings

Unplugged re-set DSL modem

No network here; sole computer

Firewall activated and de-activated, no difference

Disabled any events chatting to net in background

Download/installed new 3com driver (3c940). Deleted. Re-installed. Rinsed/lathered/repeated....

Pings have improved, specifically after new driver install. Can connect smooth as butter...for about 3 mins. Then ping is at 999.

Gawd this is driving me nuts; the graphics look so sweet but cannot get it online thanks again for any help folks....

I've been hearing about, er, issues with 3Com vs XP and/or various motherboards.

If you have the time/funds, grab a cheapie Dlink/realtek NIC and plop it in, and connect through that.

Since new install of XP , is it maybe trying to auto update XP in the background that porkin connect.????? I have the p4p800d with onboard 3com ethernet and XP home with no problems.

Go to Services and download the printable xp services zip file. Shutdown some services.

Go to Modem Tweaks and download speedguide 2k reg tweaks.

Read and follow instructions.

In network connections, under your lan conx, then advanced tab, make sure the firewall isn't enabled.

...Turns out I had a virus that was chatting to the net, handcuffing my connect. It was a "DLL" file, now vanquished, smitten,exorcised from my system.

Had been running 98SE, DSL, 24/7 for 6 months with no firewall. I guess I was lucky this never happened before. Brought this new box online with XP and it appears I was nailed within hours. Go figure.

Thanks to all who offered help...thought I'd provide a follow-up in case anyone sees this type of behavior in their systems.
